Well, that and the French. In that regard, some believe the single most important battle was the victory at Saratoga, which convinced the French that the pasty English were beatable.HillsboroDuck said:
The south also had a hell of lot more motivation. The best northern motivation was "the war to free the slaves" which didn't directly impact the lives of any of the northern soldiers, most of whom were somewhere on the scale between "dislike blacks" and "hate n*****" themselves.RaceBannon said:Swaye said:
This is true. It just somehow worked out that 75% of the really good Cadets came from the South. I think it might have been because those southern boys were like TUFF logger liberals, and the NE was already producing fancy pants fags, but that's just a guess.RaceBannon said:Didn't the South officers train at West Point by and large pre war?
So they only won with the North's training
I think there is truth to this. I am guessing but my guess is the South has provided more troops for most of our warsSwaye said:

The southern soldiers had homeland, pride, loyalty and economic motivations, even the majority of soldiers who were poor (who may have been poor but they were a huge step above slaves). They also had home field advantage for the vast majority of the events.
Motivation and home field is a huge combo in war. It's why the US won the Revolutionary War and the commies won 'Nam.
It wasn't enough for the dumbfucks from the south though. -
And wasn't worth a shit. One of my Dad's old partners went to Duke. At the time I was applying to college he tried talking me into applying there. It was starting to become pretty elite, but nothing like it is now. He used to joke that he "rode that elevator up quite by accident," in that when he went there the smart kids went to Chapel Hill and the wealthy underachievers went to Duke. Kind of like the USC/UCLA thing.HillsboroDuck said:
Correct on Vandy. Duke existed it just wasn't called Duke yet.creepycoug said:
The smart kids in the NE at that time had Harvard and Yale and several other options, so it wattered down the pool at West Point. The smart kids in the souf, all five of them, had to go to West Point. Vandy and Duke didn't even exist. There was nowhere else besides UVa, but that's public school for commoners.Swaye said:

Duke literally convened their leadership one day and said, "We want a top ten law school, biz school and medical school," they set out to do it and by God they did. They bought their way into prestige and their "brand" soared almost out of nowhere. But not that long ago, Duke wasn't that big of a deal, and I'd guess that pre-80s, nobody put it on the same level with Vandy. Now, it's a full click above Vandy in most respects and is a complete substitute for a mid-level Ivy League school. Better than Cornell and Brown and maybe Dartmouth, but still behind the rest.
There are still old-line New England types that sneer at Duke as the most nouveau riche of elite academis. We live in a weird society. -
Yes. "Duke wasn't worth a shit yet" is more true than "Duke didn't exist".creepycoug said:

If Nixon had gone to Harvard Law instead of Duke, Watergate would never have happened.creepycoug said:

I was wondering how long it would take before someone tried to desperately make it into an analogie about Peterman or Sark.

The English used the Natives in the Revolutionary war. Said they would leave them alone if they helped beat the rebels. Pretty sure they were lying
