I think other Empire's exceeding this in this respect- e.g., The Mongols. Spain had some impressive conquests but they had a pretty easy schedule because of technological advantage and germs. Also, they suffered some major upsets against England and Holland early in their empire from witch they were really never able to recover.

I think Rome is a lock in this one because of the lasting influence on the course of human history. Mongols win in terms of sq miles conquered in shortest period of time, although the Caliphate was impressive in this regard as well. Britain leads in terms of ruling over the most population and needing virtually no army to do it. Spain just got lucky and was in the right place at the right time.
