In fact, a greater percentage of people in rural areas than urban areas---almost twice as many, 9.1% of the population compared with 4.9%---are on disability. Here's the reality. Whites are the Bama of the developed world. They built the rich and successful countries of the northern hemisphere while your ancestors were picking beans and fucking goats in a squalid shithole south of the Equator. South of the equator is a pretty limiting delineation ... most areas where there were people are north of the equator, and some of those that were south, particularly in South America and Mexico, were pretty sophisticated before being fucked into oblivion by my brutal, Christian-freak conquistador ancestors, all for the compelling reasons of converting people to their particular imaginary friend in the sky and some shiny metal.
Anyway, if what you meant to refer to is areas south of what is now northern Europe, you should do more homework. There's some debate here amongst historians, but many argue that the Protestant tradition with its emphasis on education (i.e., everyone needed to be able to read the bible in their own language vs "hear" it in Latin), self reliance/work ethic, and autonomous thinking (i.e., not as hierarchical of a religion) proved to be more compatible for the coming together of capitalism and the industrial revolution. In other words Protestantism + early adoption of the Industrial Revolution = higher GDP per capita today. Japan is the outlier here, but they modeled themselves after Britain and Germany in the late 1800s.
