There are meaningful words that describe trumpism and it’s supporters: nationalist, nativist, protectionist, and isolationist come to mind. These are traditionally bipartisan traits, although it goes back and forth over time depending on who is most aggrieved at the moment. However, Trumpism, rooted in its backwards pessimism, closed-mindedness and negativity, is the exact opposite of Reagan optimism (free people and free markets across the world, led by Americans).
We thrive, lead and and get rich by being open and free (see Reagan and California). Or You can fester in the dregs and backwaters of trumpism.

Reagan helped cement the Union with the fundies but I think the story goes back further than this- i.e., LBJ lost the South for the Dems, and Nixon's Southern Strategy started turning those states RED. Carter and Bubba won some Southern States still but them's was different times and a different Democratic Party.
I agree with your point about the Left's hysteria about Reagan, but I've just never felt the analogy with Trump was a good one. In spite of being a former actor, Reagan came into office with about as much political experience as one can have short of being President. His ideology and policy goals had been known for 15+ years by the time he was elected.
