I see light between the two. I grew up in Texas with lots of folks who had rebel flags and all that crap. It was seen as being a little bit edgy even 30 years ago. In Texas.
What I haven't seen is a lot of pictures of "law abiding protestors" in Charlottesville. I've seen pictures of KKK guys, dudes with camo and long rifles hanging out across from the city's main synagogue, dudes carrying clubs and riot shields with black crosses on them.
I've also seen some pictures of the black-clad counter-rioters. But at the same time, I've seen pictures of regular counter-protestors, which notably included women, who are absent among the uniformed "militia" and "antifa" types.
Who are the respectable groups that were participating in the "Unite the Right" rally? This thing was too toxic for the Proud Boys. The alt-right came to Charlottesville looking for a fight. That's what this was about for them. "Antifa" came to oblige them. Most of Charlottesville, a liberal college town, opposed the whole thing. And it's their fucking statue anyway. -
