Who wrote him off? I don't recall anyone saying they wanted Pete fired. Even the most cynical of us have been in win or GTFO mode.
I said I wanted him fired last year. Very clear about it. At this juncture I am still in LIPO mode because as others have said we haven't actually done anything yet (I mean the lead pipe wins are awesome but if we drop three in a row then wtf). He wins the conference this year then I will retract everything I said and withhold cocaine from myself for one day as penance.
When coaches lose they suck. When they win, they are good.
I always said I would support Peterman if he won. I wasn't going to support the same bs, "he's building something, the damage Sark did, we have no talent, etc."
After 15 fucking years, it had gotten beyond old. Win or GTFO... Same as it ever was.
I think everyone here wants a coach like Pete. Dude is a fucking boss, super competitive, actual adult, competent, hates fuckheads and subtly trolls relatively consistently.
But, 2014 was a fucking nightmare and last year was barely better (last year had the Gabe Marks destruction, though, so... that was fun). I don't blame anyone for not wanting to put up with bullshit.
This year, the difference is - at least to me - we look like those Boise teams that were swaggy, well-coached, skullfuckers. Except with P5 athletes. That's probably why I'm most optimistic is because I see a continuation of what he was doing right at Boise and I'm dooging out over it.
But no one seemed to have anything personal against him. Like, it would've really sucked if Sark won 10 because he sucks and I hate him (though he never would've). But with Pete, I think everyone here wanted someone like Pete to bring us back. It's just that '14 and '15 were bullshit primarily.
'16s looking good so far and if we can take care of biz down the stretch everyone here will bleat.

This. I never wanted anything but Pete to succeed. I wanted Sark to succeed. And Ty. There is no coach that comes here that I don't want to win big. But, the last 15 years has taught me to not put up with any bullshit and probably makes my trigger pretty twitchy.
Going 6-0 this season made me forget about some of the criticisms I've had toward this staff and makes me feel more confident about the job they'll do going forward. However, there is still a lot of football to play this season so I'm not going to jump to any conclusions one way or the other.
But, like I said....I'm feeling confident and good....
I'm like 81% in. Develops talent, emphasizes defense, develops talent, his teams outmuscle everybody, develops talent, doesn't get plungered, develops talent, hates Dawgman, develops talent, plungers people...he's everything I want in a coach, he just didn't win until this year.
Now that he's winning I'd have his babies. He just needs to FINISH.

I'm not going to lie. I had doubts last year. I could also see he was trying to build something and the team had a lot of young players. It's an excuse most on here are tired of, but last year wasn't going to be a 10-2 year. It just wasn't. We all knew it going in. You could see the team was losing a lot of close games that with more experience they would probably win.
The fundamentals, especially on defense, started to shine last year. The team could actually tackle and swarm to the ball. Let's face it, a lot of teams can't...probably the majority. Doing what you're supposed to do isn't a great accomplishment, but it's nice to see your team doing it.
I'm still not convinced Smith just magically transformed into the offensive genius people like Hugh proclaim him to be. There were too many mystery calls last year. Sure, some of it was execution. A lot of it was just being stubborn and stupid. Some totally discount Tedford...bullshit. Tedford is at least helping and probably has a lot of input on plays. At the very least, he's in Smith's ear during the week and schooling him on scenarios and play calls.
He seems to have most of the pieces in place. The Pac 12 also sucks. There won't be more than three ranked teams. There might be only two. I'll take the wins either way.

1 - Hamdan has been a huge upgrade on Pease, and the WR play has born this out.
2- Smith is calling better games, and Browning has executed the calls better. As a qb coach and oc, we're better.
3 - Strausser and Socha have turned the O Line frim a liability to an asset, with room to get better.
At the end of the day, the HC gets his due for the assistants doing better

Except for Swaye, if he doesn't get satisfaction in >20 min. He's demanding a refund.
It's always been win or gtfo.
