ASU did shut down the run, but Browning was hitting under 50 percent of his passes in the 2nd half too so there really is no excuse for the pass:rush disparity. It's been going on all year.
At this point, I would love to be balanced. We aren't at all balanced though. We are very pass heavy. It's not because of ASU selling out on the run, or Utah's front 7 being a lot better than their secondary. It's every fucking game.
It's obviously what Petersen wants to do, and everyone that doesn't have their head in their ass can read between the lines from his quotes about being happy the pass game overshadowed the run game against Arizona or being more stubborn with the run.
The pass/rush disparity is out of whack and we need to be more balanced.
But the idea that that would fix the problems or lead to immediate wins is really fucking stupid. This was always a 7, maybe 8-5 team at absolute best. (And they still have a shot to get to 7 wins as OSU is terrible and they match up with the Cougs very well). The metrics argue this is a 7-5 team against an average schedule, so fuck off with the "we could be or should be 7-3 or 8-2."
The egregious drops from the WRs cost us the game more so than completely abandoning the run in the second half. Then Browning really did shit his pants with his attitude and the entire team followed suit. Something is going on with Pease (ala Cozetto) if in 3 fucking classes they cant bring in one legit blue chip WR (Renfro is a converted safety). Thats a fucking problem, similar to Coz and the OL. The best coaches win because they recruit really well. Remember Race and DDY saying DJ had top 3 classes (in conference) in the late 80s? Bitch about play calling all you want but a major problem is pretty obvious when you have WRs that cant catch and you are on the cusp of 3 substandard WR classes in a row.
Ultimately, the "we just call plays" shit is not going to cut it in the long run. Pete probably ascribes the difficulties to youth and may not make a major offensive change for another year. Close games tend to even out over time and as this young group matures they will do better. But being 1-9 in games within a TD in the 4th quarter you cant help but think that stems from a larger issue.
This is only going to get more frustrating. This year it was "we could have won 8 games." Next year it will be "we could have won the North."

The stupid thing is, we ran the ball a lot last year.
Pete is trying his best to summon the ghost of Kellen Moore, but the shit ain't working. This isn't the Mountain West (although Kellen did win at Oregon in one of BSU's 2 legit games per year).
This team would be a lot better with a healthy Cyler Miles

Renfro was recruited by everyone as a WR. Michigan State included.
He looks good. Chico sucks and Pounds sucks. But Pettis and Lenius looked good last year. They've regressed.
Is Jaydon better? Is any WR better than they were last year?
The problem is not the talent; it's the coaching.
Since I know Pete isn't going anywhere, I'd settle for a DOA'ing of Smith (that will never happen) and Pease (probably won't happen).

If dropping Pease off the Aurora bridge would make these receivers 10% better than do it. Minimal improvement and you win a few more games.

I was with u until Cyler
Cyler had a fucked up hip which hurt him both passing and running the ball
