The French are homos to be sure. But since ww2, when they've finally decide they're done, the Frogs are the western "power" that will actually kill everyone without apology. The French came to our aid in our war with England.
And they were one of the very first to send troops to Afghanistan when we were looking for allies.
Just because the Germans kicked their ass doesn't mean the French are pussies. The Germans would have kicked everybody's ass -- if Hitler hadn't tried to take on 4 powers at once, and if the Soviets hadn't sacrificed 5 million soldiers in their fight with them.
Open borders allowed this plain and simple. If I'm a Western Euro country I would not allow for such free movement by car foot or bus anymore and theyre wouldn't be one more Syrian refugee allowed to enter my country. It's a tough go for those people but the risk is too great.

Blowing up Iraq was terrible. Leaving Iraq was terrible. Everything Bush and Obama have done and not done in Iraq has been terrible.
