But my other point was that the traditional American policy of backing dictators, and playing regional powers off each other hasn't worked very well either. Support for Saddam in the 80s encouraged his push for regional supremacy, and then following the Gulf War we? inexplicably didn't support the Shi'a/Kurdish uprisings against him, laying the groundwork for the Iranians to enter Iraq post-2003 as allies of the new government.
And about Obama, if he were to bomb Assad, who's going to step in to counteract the role that ISIS and the other jihadi groups are playing? With ISIS, sure, he could start a ground war. But the first American POW that gets beheaded would trigger massive domestic dissent, and we'ed have to bring everyone home. -
