Some big news out of Huskies camp this morning, as Washington announced fifth-year senior offensive lineman Dexter Charles has retired from football due to a lingering knee injury.
With 30 starts through his first three collegiate seasons, Charles was by far the most experienced member of UW’s relatively inexperienced offensive line. A native of Camano Island, Charles has already graduated from UW and seemed a sure thing to begin the season as the Huskies’ starting left guard.
He frequently played through injury during his career, though it seemed most of his problems were in his shoulder.
“We're all very disappointed that Dexter's injury won't allow him to continue to play,” Huskies coach Chris Petersen said in a statement released by UW. "I'm grateful for his dedication and hard work and very pleased that he earned his degree. He's interested in the coaching profession, and I wish him nothing but the best."
Petersen is scheduled to speak with reporters after this morning’s practice, so we’ll likely have more then.
Oh no! We'll be missing a guy who sucks!!! What will we do?!?
Though, I think this burns Adams' redshirt.
Yup, Charles became a doog legend only because Sark's OL recruiting was so miserable. At no point in his career has he been above average or close to it.
I assume this will lead to improved line play.. fewer hands to the face penalties, fewer dt's and lb's absolutely steamrolling Dexter Charles on the way to sacking the qb...
Yep. I'm guessing Shelton starts off at LT but Adams overtakes him.
Kirkland and Fuvai should be selling their couches soon enough as well. This may well yet be a normal O Line class. Too bad it's an absolutely terrible year for O Linemen
McGary is probably the top OT off the bench since I've never heard anything even slightly positive about Kirkland.
I don't see McGary playing this year at all. Gotta remember he is really raw, I think he is a year away from contributing for us. He looks great, but needs to learn the position.
Adams got A LOT of work yesterday at LT. I think like others that he is starting by end of the year.

Either way it'll be interesting.

He was still a RS-SR with a boatload of starts.
Another reason to start Lindquist @ BSU since we'll have a new LT, LG, and C with the RG only having some starts a few seasons ago.
At least Tuff Guy Cozz is no longer the OL coach so I have faith Strausser can get it done.
2021 will be special.
