My brother is a sommelier/winemaker living in Napa. He also served 3 years in Iraq when shit was hitting the fan in the early stages of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was able to raise funds and secure a location in DT Napa for a memorial to fallen troops from the region, which included a bronzed gun, boots, and helmet.
There was significant backlash from the community about how "aggressive" the statue was. Said it "promotes violence and gives the wrong impression to the numerous international terrorists tourists visiting the region each year". My brother led the charge and told them to fuck off, it remains today, but he has to attend a handful of city council meetings a year to make sure some bullshit doesn't happen.

Cool story, so I googled Napa Iraq War Monument and see a story about this girl that raised the funds for the monument. She was a high school senior, and the story makes it sound like she did most of the work.
