Still can't believe the ref said Kralik caught that pass.

That highlight has always bothered me. One of the worst calls I have ever seen.

I was shocked at the call at the time. But then I went right back to dooging it up.

I still get a full two and a half inches in my sweatpants when I see highlights of that team.

At the time I reasoned that if I were a Nebraska fan, I would have wondered if the game was fixed.

Nice write up Derek. Tommie Smith seems to be a husky legend that slipped my young mind. My Dad always talked about Emtman, Bailey, Hoffman, Kennedy, Hobert, Shane and Dana, etc but for whatever reason I never heard much of Smith. I knew he was a big time recruit who got into a little trouble and made the play against Nebraska.

For such a talented guy, why the CFL? His NFL career never materialize?

If memory serves me, he was drafted late by the Seahawks, got cut, played in the CFL, and then played in the WFL or something like that.

Just read the article, great stuff. Loved the youtube highlight package, too.

One querey - are there two Kevin Wilhites? The one I remember played for Whoregon (lol!) after committing to UW, but that was long before the Tommy Smith era. Was there another one who played for 'Braska?

I had the same thought when Tommie mentioned his name. I had to look it up to be sure.

The Nebraska running back was #19 Kenny Wilhite. HTH

He probably said Kenny and I wrote it down as Kevin.

WTF did Baird mean, get in trouble off the field or by taking too many risks on the field and sometimes get out of position?

IIRC, Smith was a tweener for the NFL at the time. Fast enough to play OLB but not big enough and big enough to play safety but not fast enough. If he had just graduated, I wonder if he would've found a home in the NFL as a nickel LB or a Dime defender in a 4-1-6 (shrug).

He was suspended for missing too many classes.
