I guess my point would be that winning is hard. Stanford is 5-5 this year. It's just rough.

Stanford is 5-5 because running the ball three times and punting doesn't work when you don't have seven NFL starters in your from seven on defense. Look at the way Mariota runs circles around college defenders, except Stanford the prior two years.
Zero creativity, poor game management, and a lack of Jim Harbaugh is why Stanford will go back to the middle.
