Gilby, you lying fuck, you didn’t take anyone to the rosebowl
Imagine thinking a guy who went 11-21 in conference while at Cal and went 6-6 with a pretty talented UW team the year before (with losses at home to 6-6 Nevada and at historically bad Arizona) needed the benefit of the doubt of a second year.
The records that Penix broke by and large belonged to Cody
But why did Cody have those records? Because our 2.2 YPC running game was so bad that we had no choice but to throw.
And I'm not hating on him. I just question HOF status. Cody's mom once wrote me a thank you email when I defended him on Dawgman. That was before Kim Grinolds replaced my name on nine years worth of articles.

He had the records because he set them
Which occurs when you throw the ball 50 times a game, you're going to rack up yards regardless of whether you're good or not.
I never said Cody wasn't good. I liked Cody, he was a good QB. What I question is HOF credentials. Who did he beat? He beat Michigan in his first start. He knocked off Oregon twice and a highly ranked WSU. He lost to Purdue in the Sun Bowl and lost to Texas in the Holiday Bowl. Got destroyed in Miami. Lost to Nevada at home. He beat a 6-6 USC team in 2001. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
Oregon's Danny O'Neil threw for a ton of yards but often choked inside the 20. All those yards didn't mean he was great. (As an example)

The 2002 running game (and probably the 2003, it's more of a blur, and back then, I worked a lot of Saturdays), was god awful. Slick Rick's go to were quick slants.

I hate it when our ? 2 dads argue. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle. If the world knows you are going to throw it becomes harder not easier. But, as it happened, I hated that we? threw the ball so much.
The thing about Cody is that he was real. A real cowboy.
Dude took a role on special teams just to make and stay in the NFL. He was a true Dwag if there ever was one. Much more than, say, Corey Dillon.

The winning TD pass is at the 2:23 mark. Need Bob Rob & Jim Walden's radio call for this. I'm too lazy to look for it.

Interception by @DerrickJohnsons at the 1:56 mark.
Everyone's favorite glasses ref, Jay Stricherz, officiating.
