Imagine thinking a guy who went 11-21 in conference while at Cal and went 6-6 with a pretty talented UW team the year before (with losses at home to 6-6 Nevada and at historically bad Arizona) needed the benefit of the doubt of a second year.

Seriously? Might as well let Hugh Millen and Cary Conklin in

I think this might be a bit of a sympathy thing given the health issues he's had

The records that Penix broke by and large belonged to Cody

But why did Cody have those records? Because our 2.2 YPC running game was so bad that we had no choice but to throw.

And I'm not hating on him. I just question HOF status. Cody's mom once wrote me a thank you email when I defended him on Dawgman. That was before Kim Grinolds replaced my name on nine years worth of articles.
He had the records because he set them
Which occurs when you throw the ball 50 times a game, you're going to rack up yards regardless of whether you're good or not.

How is that different from any qb like say Penix

    Cody was good.

I never said Cody wasn't good. I liked Cody, he was a good QB. What I question is HOF credentials. Who did he beat? He beat Michigan in his first start. He knocked off Oregon twice and a highly ranked WSU. He lost to Purdue in the Sun Bowl and lost to Texas in the Holiday Bowl. Got destroyed in Miami. Lost to Nevada at home. He beat a 6-6 USC team in 2001. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Oregon's Danny O'Neil threw for a ton of yards but often choked inside the 20. All those yards didn't mean he was great. (As an example)

The 2002 running game (and probably the 2003, it's more of a blur, and back then, I worked a lot of Saturdays), was god awful. Slick Rick's go to were quick slants.

It is the Huskies hall of fame not Canton

I remember reading an article how Cody Pickett out threw Jake Plummer at Jake Plummer's own camp. That cemented him as legendary status in my mind.

One of my most favorite Apple Cup finishes... Pickett to Cory Williams. I was there.

The winning TD pass is at the 2:23 mark. Need Bob Rob & Jim Walden's radio call for this. I'm too lazy to look for it.

    https://youtu.be/aDLoUdH_GtQ?si=4RRxtNS78KrQ3foP

Interception by @DerrickJohnsons at the 1:56 mark.

Everyone's favorite glasses ref, Jay Stricherz, officiating.

HuskyJW was running the aisle of the North Upper Deck on that one

If I remember correctly on the cougar broadcast, it was Bob Robertson that kept yelling …”IF THATS NOT EXCESSIVE CELEBRATION I DONT KNOW WHAT IS!”

Wasn't Walden freaking out about offensive PI?

Picket was overrated, IMO. Tough kid and Dwag, but he didn't win anything. Outside of total yardage, his numbers are pretty mediocre.

It seemed like he was on track to have a pretty big senior season...

The coaching change really hurt and I also remember hearing after the season that he was hurt pretty early on... and played the rest of the year at a lot less than 100%.

A big senior year would've changed his legacy too... Lots of bad luck being stuck with Gilby....

    True

He couldn't play the 2nd half of the Oregon game his senior year. Junior year he lit it up with Reggie

Cody, Browning and Penix are the only QBs this century to start two wins against Oregon

    Does anything else matter?

The transition from Rick to Gilby sours the memories. Following Tui didn't help
