That’s the best part, it doesn’t.

Recruiting doesn’t change until we change our NIL approach

This seems true and a sad reality of modern college football. You Gotta think like the recruits and families though that are probably just looking at it more like the NFL now. Would you take less money to play for the Bengals because they are more fun to play for or for the Lions because you like their coach or the Seahawks because you grew up a fan and get to stay home if you would have to take way less money up front to play for them?

Seems like the portal is how they are going to get the players that will step in next year anyway...

One of the many stupid things about recruiting is there’s not really correlation of on field performance leading to substantially better classes. One of Oregon’s worst classes, if not their worst (discounting seasons with a coaching change) was the spring after Oregon made the title game vs Ohio state.

I remember once analyzing the UW class following the Orange Bowl win, and it was abysmal

The word out there is that they are only going to take like 2 more kids in this class (it didn't go like they expected) and save the rest of the spots for portal. They will be replacing a lot and don't want to take project high school kids.

Waiting for Courtney to start earning that paycheck… any day now.

Also, how many games into the season do we have to go before we get a single ‘25 commit…

I don't think its the case these days but James would say that the losers would be beating the recruiting trail while UW was doing bowl prep
When UW was practicing for the '91 Rose Bowl, they had none other than senior high school superstar Napoleon Kaufman watching from the sidelines. I'm not sure why that memory popped into my head as I read your post, but it did.

The transfer portal is the reason this team is the juggernaut it is.

Would be nice to get up to #15 or so in recruiting rankings

We went to the playoff in '16 and recruiting didn't really pick up until '18-'19. I would expect similar for this team if all goes well, but with NIL its hard to say we ever get back to borderline top 10 classes.

But now we can use the portal to hopefully bridge the gap.

I don't trust too much reliance on the portal. There are a lot of bidders for the top talent and some seem to have deeper pockets than UW.

I do trust this staff to recruit HS players who can play. I'd just like to see a little more success going up against the big recruiting powers for some top 100 types. I also don't like to see them forced to punt on HS recruiting 3 months before signing day because it's not working out and they hope to cover that failure using the portal.

On the bright side, this wasn't going to be a big class anyway and the staff is looking good for Jericho Johnson, the Cali OT, and still has a chance with the TX safety who visited against Tulsa. A class of 15 HS recruits and 5 portals is a-ok by me for the 2024 class.

At the same time, the 2025 class will need to be better on the HS side since it should be bigger.
