He will get some good players and win some games but he has zero experience dealing with institutions and relationships that will hold him accountable for what he does.
He will screw up epically in some fashion. He will have to deal with legit D1 coordinators, other coaches, and kids who have other options besides Deion, including NFL futures, their parents etc.
With his ego and dictatorial style he will have players and families telling him to FO directly to his face. Will there be a Marcus Peters...
Seems plausible.
I'm officially out of the prediction business, so I have no idea what will happen with Sanders and tend to just go with the data that points to most coaches failing.
But is having a massive ego and dictatorial style something unique to Sanders? That alone doesn't seem like it would be the problem. And, of course, every coach in the country has to deal with the things you listed, so that's not unique to his situation either. And let's not pretend that Colorado is this massive program with a rich history and sky high expectations. They had a cup of coffee under the bright lights a generation ago and NOCs anymore. It's a place populated by students who want to pretend like they got into a great school and whose parents can afford the extravagant OOS tuition so they can be someplace pretty. Other than being part of the opening of Mork and Mindy, there is nothing special or unique about CU. As another poster pointed out, this is the most attention they've had since the Promise Keeper was running the show.
It depends on what the ego is based on.
Great coach ego: Product of being a grinder with internal confidence, charisma, the ability to inspire young people, get kids to buy in, and believe in YOU. Product of results. See Saban, Dabo, Urban, etc.
Deion ego: Product of ridiculous god given talent and the sense of superiority that engenders. Being able to get away with almost anything you want to. Nobody lives a less accountable life than an ultra-elite athlete. He is not a grinder who got to where he did by learning how to produce winners. He got to where he is by being good at sports and a great self-promoter.
He is much more likely to make capricious decisions that are based on prickly ego that have nothing to do with creating a winner. See withholding a kids practice tape.
Any evidence he is a capable administrator, planner, etc? Any evidence he gets the most out of people around him? I haven't seen any. That's what great coach ego is based on. Doing those things extremely well for a long time.
when the portalers get portal’d that represents a problem.
is prime executing a roster genocide?
(This is not a call for an actual genocide)
Nobody in the world knows how to fill HALF a CFB roster between spring and fall. Much less coach them up and win games. The idea that this is all according to his plan seems ridiculous. That Deion Sanders is the one to do it seems absurd.
Deion gutted nearly the entire WR and then was surprised when Montana Lemonious Craig ditched as well. What else would you do if your best friends on the team got treated like shit? I bet there are a million things that have never crossed Deion's mind.
He's going to put out a team that is worse than last year's. Should be fun.
