2012 would have been a good year for a lost cause. Goldwater in 64 begat Reagan in 80. Nixon was the establishment candidate in 60 and 68. Reagan would have beat Carter in 76 too but Ford was the establishment choice
People forget that the GOP freaked out when Reagan got the nomination in 80 and wanted Ford as co president. True story -
