Why would NFL teams entertain the idea of hiring a guy who was mediocre as a college head coach?

He’s probably be a great NFL OC but hiring him as HC seems incredibly stupid

Kliff has had amazing success offensively, but it has been defense that had held him back. As head coach that is his problem, but NFL teams think that they can fix that part of it. The front offices I assume think if they can make the right hire at DC, Kliff could be very successful in the NFL.

a guy that gets hired at one place but defiantly continues to interview for other jobs is going to be too headstrong to allow others to choose his DC without meddling and self-sabotaging

I wouldn't put the situation of a college OC interviewing for an NFL head coaching gig into this category. I don't think there are many OC's in the country that at least wouldn't want to entertain this idea.

I really don't think Kliff knew he would be in such high demand from the NFL before he took the USC job. If he had known, I think he would have waited.
