AUB vs Wash - Week 1 starting OL ...

So, how's UWs OL shaping up? Injuries? I know you all thought Adams wouldn't play ... but what these trainers can do, with the likes of a torn ACL, has gotten to the point where
these players can come back earlier than expected. We had our third and fourth best WR tear their ACLs back in April and they were out practicing yesterday ... Coaches say they expect them back at some point in the season.

Here's a bit of info on our OL (which if I had to say ... would be our biggest concern)

The Center position would've gone to a highly touted redshirt freshmen (Brahms) but he broke his leg. Jr Kaleb Kim (former 4 star who hasn't lived up to his billing) was slated to start their.
However yesterday we got word that they moved our most experienced OL (RG Mike Horton) to Center. We had a bit of a log jam at RT (Grad transfer Driskoll, 5* RF Ashley & RF Austin Troxell were battling it out) but this actually makes a lot of sense when you're talking about "Best 5".

Now, this is based off the first practice of Fall camp .. But I think If I had to bet, our starting OL would be (From LT -RT):
Tega Wongo, Harrell, Horton, Ashley, Driskoll. I'm going with Driskoll at RT over the highly recruited Troxell based on experience.

Wongo - freak but cost us dearly in the Clemson game. Played one year of HS ball, redshirted then started against arguably the best DL in college football last year. Gave up several sacks.
He lost his job after week 2 but came on towards the end of the year and earned it back.
LG Harrell - He and Horton started several games last year, we feel very good about our guards (well, we feel good about Harrell and Horton)

C Horton - I like this move a lot, it lets 5* Ashley move inside to allow Driskoll and Troxell to battle at RT.

RG Ashley - Uber talented, offered by every school ... BUT .... 1st game against a great Defense (Sounds like Tega from last year ) we'll see how he holds up

RT Driskoll - UMass grad started many games on that level, but coaches raved about him in the Spring and he held his own against Miss State last year (didn't give up a sack) ..
MSU has a nasty DL which is ranked in the Top 3 of the SEC this year ... highlighted by the 5 star Jr Jeffrey Simmons a.k.a. the woman beater who Driskoll went head to head with often in that game

As an Auburn fan, I feel more comfortable about this group than I would with Kim starting at Center. I think Brahms could've been a 4 year starter ... but with him out, I'm glad the coaches have explored this instead of just settling for Kim at C.


Let me know about the poor souls on your OL that will have to face our DL (I'm sure some of you fags like @CuntWaffle feel the same about your DL vs our OL)

    This will be Center's first year at right guard, but we expect the transition to go smooth.

    He ahead of schedule on rehab, but don’t think the coaches will let him play that dline right away. If your coaches are worth a shit, I would line up ur best DT against the center

    They are being semi optimistic with Adams, but I doubt they risk him in a non P12 game against your front if he's not 100.

    Not only would it be devastating to lose him again, if he's not in full form and gets abused on tape against your guys' all stars it could affect his draft status. Seems like a worst case scenario lose-lose for player and team.

    Our center is an undersized converted guard who was forced into starting as a TF and got absolutely abused in pass protection against USC, Bama.

    He's great when we run and his natural position is C so this will be another trial by fire moment for him. Hopefully he won't be as exposed in this roll and his agility will inspire us to RUN THE BALL

    UCLA and USC are practicing fall camp in 90-100 degree weather even without Mora taking the Bruins to San Bernardino

    Even worse down south when you add the high humidity. That's what makes men out of boys.

    I realize Seattle is baking in near 80 degree weather but it isn't the same

    It's only 95 with high humidity hear .... so coach tries to get their balls to drop by going inside with the heat on.

    Personally, I'm optimistic about Adams. There's still a while to go before the game and I feel like they are just slowly building him back up to get ready for the game. If he's in the 85-90% range I don't think he plays. If he's in the 95%+ range I'm sure he does play. Likely a fair point though that it may be possible that his conditioning could be an issue though early in the season

    Wattenberg filled in last year at LT when Adams got hurt and as noted did a decent enough job for a guy best suited inside. He's a very talented guy on the interior and has a bright future. I suspect that he'll be a mid-round draft pick at worst by the time he graduates.

    Center (Nick Harris) is the guy that Bama rag dolled as a true freshman when he was playing RG. Moving inside SHOULD help him out as very rarely does CENTER have to block 1 on 1. Obviously any time that you get a position switch you have to let it play out a bit. But if his run game prowess follow over to the CENTER position it should be a positive move. He's got big shoes to fill in replacing Coleman Shelton (go watch some video from the Colorado game last year to see how much we can ask of our centers in the run game particularly pulling).

    RG is going to be a giant question mark to see who emerges. Henry Bainivalu is a RS Frosh that is very, very talented. Obviously a question for any young guy how they respond on the big stage. Another name to keep an eye on is Henry Roberts. He's a former 4* guy that has largely underperformed so far in his career. Now as an RS Jr, it looks like the light may finally be going on for him.

    McGary is generally pretty good and definitely passes the look test. He can get lost from time to time but there's little mediocre in his game. It's either really good or really bad.

    All in all, if guys like James or Boomer Sossebee hit the field against Auburn in anything less than garbage time, UW's going to be in big trouble.

    kaleb when he is on he is potential first rounder, too inconsistent though

    It all hinges on Adams being healthy. With a healthy Adams anchoring the left side with Watty the line could hold its own. Without Adams whichever guard gets moved out to LT will likely be turnstiled all night and our interior will be weaker as well due to having to replace our best guard. The run game won't get going and we will get mopey Jack Browning going 3 and out all night.

    Adams-Wattenberg-Harris-Bainivalu/James-McGary is the lineup.

    Adams, Sr- 4-year starter, athletic, physical specimen. Potential top-10 pick next year if back to full strength.

    Watty, rSo- forced to fill in at LT for Adams for the last half of 2017 did OK despite his lack of experience and playing outside his natural guard position.

    Harris, Jr- big plusses and minuses. Great in the run game because he moves so well and is aggressive as fuck finishing blocks but has been a liability against physical teams in pass pro since he is so undersized. General consensus that the move from guard to C will help some in pass pro.

    Bain, rFr- Hoping he takes this spot from senior JAG James just because James sucks and all the other depth sucks. A tackle after Adams and McGary leave. Recovering from back issues.

    McGary, rSr- our other bookend 4 year starter and another country-strong physical specimen but not nearly as athletic or smooth as Adams. Can get beat badly at times but will be at minimum a mid-round draft pick.

    With Adams out or limited the options are either to slide Watty outside like they did last year and replace him with Bain, James, or Sossebee or insert Bain at LT and keep everyone else the same. In camp they've been running with Bain at LT we will see if he is ready for Auburn in his first ncaa game.


    Good stuff. I would like to see the matchup of Adams vs Davidson and Moultry (we rotate a lot ... but these two are both 5* guys) Davidson projected as a 1st rounder and Moultry was a freak last year as a true freshman playing behind Jeff Holland.
    Our DL coach says that TD Moultry is better than Carl Lawson who starts for the Bengals now.

    Our D Line:

    SDE - Davidson Jr - Has been a force since his freshman year, we'll go pro early after this season
    DT - Russel Sr - Started every game since a Freshman, doesn't get the recognition he deserves by being sandwiched in between 3 5*s but he was a highly recruited player in HS as well (4*)
    DT - Derrick Brown Jr - Stud DT that will also go pro after this year 5*
    WDE/Buck - TD Moultry - 5* True Freshman who played on this talented DL last year ... played more towards the end of the year ... some think he could contend for Auburn's All Time sack leader

    2nd string
    Coe 5* who played well against Bama and UGA in the rotation last year
    Williams Sr played in every game for 3 years in rotation
    Truesdell 4* SO
    Bryant 4* highly rated ... going to be the next big time DE.

    You can see why I get boners over our DL.

    at LB we're as stacked at all three positions. Anchored by 2 Srs and we had one of the best LB recruiting classes in the country last year ... those guys are SO now.

    We're very excited about our CBs one full time starter and one guy who started a few games but played in all.
    One experienced S who had 2 Ints against Bama and one that's a Jr ... more concerned about Safety depth (2nd string are both Tr Fr ... both highly recruited 4*s)

    Clemson might have a SLIGHT ... SLIGHT lead over us for the best DL in college football ... but it's debatable. But we have the best overall Front 7 in CFB ... even over Bama ....

    The only reason we're not ranked in the top 3 with a stud QB is the question marks about our OL ... which I addressed in another thread.

    Yesterday I heard our OC Bush Hamdan talk about recruiting these veteran Auburn players when he was on Florida’s staff.

    There’s definitely a level of respect for Auburn’s talent.
