Off Season Natty Off to Great Start

The Huskies are coming off back-to-back double-digit win seasons for the first time since 1990-91. In order to reach that level in 2017, coach Chris Petersen will have to fill a couple of key voids on both sides of the ball. The offense will have a new play-caller (Bush Hamdan) after Jonathan Smith left to be the head coach at Oregon State. Hamdan has a solid core to build around on offense with the return of quarterback Jake Browning, tackle Trey Adams and tight end Hunter Bryant. Running back Myles Gaskin has posted three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and is contemplating a jump to the NFL. Even if Gaskin returns, Salvon Ahmed should see a bigger role in the offense after rushing for 388 yards and three scores on 61 carries in 2017. The Huskies need to develop more playmakers for Browning on the outside after Dante Pettis (63 receptions) expired his eligibility after the Fiesta Bowl. A healthy Chico McClatcher and the addition of freshman Marquis Spiker will alleviate some of the concern at receiver. Washington has led the Pac-12 in scoring defense in each of Petersen’s three years in Seattle. This group must replace standout lineman Vita Vea, linebacker Keishawn Bierria and safety Ezekiel Turner. However, coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski returns plenty of talent to build around, including linebacker Ryan Bowman, cornerback Byron Murphy and safety Taylor Rapp. Don’t expect a drastic drop in production on defense. Most importantly for Washington: Stanford visits Seattle next fall.

Washington
2017 finish: 10-3
Postseason result: Lost to Penn State 42-35 in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl
With Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen on the way out and Bryce Love perhaps to follow, the Huskies’ profile in the Pac-12 is on the rise. Regardless, Washington brings back a group perhaps most well suited to restore some luster to the conference after a 1-8 bowl showing. QB Jake Browning is set to return for his fourth year, in which he must adjust to a new offensive coordinator as Bush Hamdan comes from the NFL to replace Jonathan Smith, off to coach Oregon State. Running back Myles Gaskin, also pondering an NFL decision, could provide a sizable boost offensively as Browning loses top target Dante Pettis. Vita Vea, a standout up front, is gone from the defense, which returns the core of a unit that rated as the Pac-12’s best in 2017. The bowl loss won’t dampen spirits long as UW looks in position to make a second playoff run in Chris Petersen’s fifth year.

Honestly, somewhere between #10 and #15 is a fair representation of where we are right now. We aren't in the Top 10 until proven other-wise. Now if Peterman could summon the ghosts of big OOC wins past AND catch Auburn when their stock price is low, then things could change.

So does Jim Mora. And the loaded, loaded south.

Does Hamdan plan on somehow forcing Browning to do some arm strength work? I feel like 11 wins are inevitable, if so.

We are going to be really good next year. We lose Pettis and Vea. Nobody else is really that important.

It's possible.RoadDawg55 said:We are going to be really good next year. We lose Pettis and Vea. Nobody else is really that important.
The thing I'm excited about (like everyone) is the transition from Smith to Bush. And not just because of play calling. I have a feeling Bush will be more willing to push his receivers to the top of the depth than Smiff would have been. Jones, Cook, Bynum, and Osbourne all committed to Bush. Spiker was ready to commit to Bush then pushed his commitment back when Bush left. All 5 of them are Bush guys. Those dudes populating the depth at WR along with Chico makes things a whole lot different offensively. Browning will still be Browning but even with Jake we had a high functioning offense when we had two elite receivers in 2016. I think it's possible we get close to that in 2018.
The concern is RB depth, but if Gaskin comes back I feel a whole lot better about that. I don't trust McGrew to get meaningful carries. -

Browning is still Browning ... I have no expectations for that to magically change.RoadDawg55 said:We are going to be really good next year. We lose Pettis and Vea. Nobody else is really that important.
What concerns me is that I don't see a lot of playmakers in the Front 7 ... we lose Vea and Bierria who were at worst 2 of the top 3 playmakers in the Front 7. We desperately need Levi to take the next step and if Kaho can come in and be a playmaker early on like Shaq was, then our defense has a good chance to remain at relatively the same level that we had in 2017.
Against better teams, I could see us continuing to have challenges and having teams push the upper 20's into the low 30's for points scored against the Defense. The problem is that those teams have the kind of athletes that usually results in Browning throwing up one of his 18 of 32 for 220 games which puts us in a challenging position to outscore the opposition.
We have a ton of weapons on offense next year though. The OL will be as good as it has been in 20 years. Assuming Gaskin comes back the thought of him pairing with Ahmed is amazing. Our TEs should still be strong with Sample and Bryant. The big question is who will emerge at the WR position ... if we can get that in great place then Browning will have no excuses and we should be back to 2016 offensive levels.
It also wouldn't shock me if we had packages in place for Yankoff next year ... I could definitely see him not redshirting given the run/pass option that he gives and allows us to somewhat mitigate Browning at times (as/if needed). That doesn't mean that I think Yankoff would be ahead of Sirmon in 2019 so don't twist. But I do think that it's going to be very likely that the backup next year will be either Yankoff or Sirmon.
