Boov Poast of the Day

JS isn't going to turn this thing around overnight, but I think he will be able to build a very competitive program over time. Let's be honest, it is going to take 3-5 years at least before we start talking about being top-tier in the Pac-12 but I think JS can get us there. Was there anyone out there that would be able to do it faster? If he succeeds, it will just build upon his status as an OSU legend. JS is a winner, has won everywhere he has been as a player and as a coach and I think he will eventually be one here at OSU.
I hear all the complaining about "why did it take so long? We had 7 weeks and this is what we got?" , etc... but the season just ended on Saturday and we have a coach on Weds. We had to wait until the season was over before we could do face to face interviews in most cases. Sure, there were unemployed or retread coaches out there we could have locked up sooner, but not waiting to speak to sitting coaches would have been a mistake. I am guessing we will eventually hear who else Barnes interviewed (besides Baldwin) and I am guessing he had talked to several people during the 7 weeks before the season ended, but I also feel that JS was sitting towards the top of that list from the beginning. Even if we talked with coaches like Les Miles or other big-name coaches, were they really interested or just getting their name out in the press for a higher profile while they looked for a bigger school. I never saw Miles coming here, I would rather have JS than Neuheisel, I was "Meh" on Graham... There were other coordinators that were mentioned but they also didn't have head coaching experience and were probably not learning from one of the best in Peterson (Stanford DC excluded...) so why not bring back a Legend and give him a shot. I will support him and cheer my but off for him to be a huge success.

Once he gets his assistants in there...

We went with the big name flashy hire with Andersen and how did that turn out? - Not well as I recall but probably the first time Anderson has been called flashy
Let's be honest, it is going to take 3-5 years at least before we start talking about being top-tier in the Pac-12 but I think JS can get us there. - this is almost 8 years faster than Leach needs at WSU -
and thus begins the 22-year-plan to lose the Alamo Bowel

A new hope in Alderaan... They'll be screaming in horror soon enough before they are all silenced.

The Assistants are HUGE! Especially on the defensive side of the ball. Here's where it gets completely different from being an O Coordinator to being a HC! He has to give love to all phases! He needs to hire experience, knowledge and trust! Experience is needed above all else IMO. This will be tough because coaching is very ego driven and finding guys with experience that are willing to work under a green HC like Smith will be difficult! That's why I think trust will be huge!
But bringing in the right assts/coordinators can help with recruiting and of course, game planning, technique and schematics! I really hope Smitty was thinking ahead about some guys to reach out to before he knew he was hired. You don't just put your name out there for something like this, without a plan at least partially in place, IMO!
Whoever the staff is, they need to get on this recruiting class (keep it in tact), and hit the ground running for more. I think the no contact date is approaching very soon for break!
A LOT of work ahead! A LOT of work!!
Go Beavs! -
Great "You have been banned from this forum." as always.

What does being top-tier mean to 99% of Boov fans who also buy their cereal in bags?

If we are being realistic, we probably were not going to get a big name coach that hadn't failed at other places already. We went with the big name flashy hire with Andersen and how did that turn out? I have come around to acceptance and a bit of excitement about the hire. JS is already a legend at OSU as a player and has been under the tutelage of a great coach for several years who knows how to build a program the right way. I am expecting JS to build a strong, motivated, young staff with a couple high energy recruiters that will fill the void in personality that JS just doesn't have. I hope he retains Cory Hall which is one of those personalities, but back as the DB coach and not at a coordinator level. Also, I expect him to bring in someone from his past that can continue to offer advice and mentorship for the tough situations that JS hasn't experienced yet. This might be Erickson? This might be Riley? Who knows, but I don't think it will be in a key coaching position, but maybe as a special consultant or some sort of advisory role.

Who can forget the long throw down field after losing his shoe and the famous/infamous two point try at the end to try and win it in regulation...
I was listening to that game on the radio with Darrell Aune and was going absolutely nuts. I recall sinking to the ground when the two point conversion failed.
I was there as the well-spoken, cerebral Nigel Burton broke up the pass in the end zone in front of Section 8. -

Unfortunately for Jonathan Smith, he seems to be quite asexual. Nothing would get his little peterman (tee hee) excited.

You started dating the hottie (CGA) that just walked out on her former boyfriend to go out with you. Small red flag, but she's hot so you go along with it. At first things seem great, everyone is asking how did you end up with this hottie. From all outward appearances you landed something way over your "pay grade". As things go along, she starts becoming high maintenance. You put up with it because SHE's HOT. She starts pissing off your friends (recruits and coaches) and you are not getting invited to as many events. Things seem to be getting a little better for awhile, then she start going over the top with her drama. You get in a big fight and decide you are not going to see each other anymore.
You start looking for the next girlfriend. You check out some of the other hot single girls. You jump on an internet dating site. Most of them play nice, but don't really want to date you. You consider some of your past girlfriends (DE and MR) and ponder going back with them. Then you remember your little sister's best friend. You remember - kind of plain looking, dressed really casual, had glasses. Friendly and nice, but not anything hot. You remember way back when, she had a huge crush on you. You chat her up, and yeah she still has that crush. Yet you decide to look out there again at some other hotties. You ask your friends to set you up. But the silence is deafening. Not quite desperate, but you need a date for the event coming up in three weeks (early signing period), so you ask her if shes available. Before you get the words out shes saying yes yes yes.
Now that you are dating, you convince yourself she really is better looking than you realize. She got rid of the nerdy glasses; is wearing more stylish clothing; and has filled out some since you knew her when she was a kid. The next time you talk to your parents on the phone you mention that you two are dating now, and she tells you that you should have never dated that Bit-h and should have dated that sweet friend of your sisters all along. You shrug your shoulders and mumble the timing was never right before.........
We will find out shortly what she is like at the dance. Will this be a long time romance, or more of a summer fling. Only time will tell.

Christ!!
I'm glad it doesn't feel like the Jimmy Anderson hire. Smith went out on his own and proved himself.
Hopefully he is managing his relationship with Canzano carefully so it does not embarrass the university. Perhaps he should disclose all texts to reporters up front instead of having others FOIA the communications.
