defense (semi long poast)
1. We don't take chances
2. We're slow. Yes having guys like Vea and Gaines is fantastic. Most of the time we are stonewalling them. And it means nothing because our lb aren't shooting gaps and making plays in he backfield. Taylor Rapp who's a safety is the only one who has that ability.
Credit to Stanford for playing a mostly clean game. No drops. Costello was accurate. No penalties / none were called (their rt was false starting every play).
The reason why teams like wsu do nnothing against us is because we are uniquely built to beat teams that make mistakes. Wsu will do the same this year turning the ball over and committing penalties. We have no ability to dictate the game. We don't force turnovers. We don't give the offense great field position. We don't get after the quarterback.
There's a lot of work to do on offense but there is still work to do on defense as well

Weird, because after our first 6 games, some posters here said this was an elite defense.dhdawg said:

It is almost as if strength of competition makes a difference when evaluating a unit, and 6 games against 6 cupcakes wasn't telling us anything. -
We're starting our 3rd string DBs, so that can't really be helped.
The main problem is outside of Kikaha and Mathis for a short season we have had absolutely zero heat from the edge.
Potatoe? Amandre? Anyone? The interior D can be all world, but it doesn't fucking matter without HEAT FROM THE EDGE. -
This is true. Losing your two top cb is devestating. The lack of speed tho especially at lb is really concerning.Doogles said:We're starting our 3rd string DBs, so that can't really be helped.

One thing i found funny last night were the people in the game thread crying because Shaw was yelling at the officials all night. "Shut up Shaw!" "ShawFS" "that wasn't a penalty shaw! Quit crying"
I wish Petersen would get after the officials like that. If you can dictate the calls they make, you do it. Standing on the sideline with a scowl on your face doesn't scare anyone but the pussies on your team -
Defense got frustrated and started trying to do too much. Vea’s face mask was huge. McIntosh lurked inside and lost contain on a big Love run.
They had a shit game. Unfortunately, that can’t happen with our shitty offense. -
5 reasons > 2 reasons

D weakness was edge contain and height. Cant teach a 5'9" guy to play like he's 6'6" or out jump a tall guy. Can't coach height. Those 3rd down high softball throws were our death knell. Outside contain has been a problem the entire season. Freeman exposed it in the Quack game for all to see on a consistent basis. I don't blame Vea much he was reaching around an O linemen and grabbed what he could unfortunately it was a face mask. Stanford couldn't get a flag thrown at them most of the night. Holding was common but not called. If we thought about doing anything that even resembled a penalty they threw a flag. Needed to dial up a few blitzes as well but Costello got rid of it pretty quick most of the time. Pissed me off. Our O could not get going in the 2nd. O line got leaky and there were a few crappy play calls but execution wasn't consistent so play calling doesn't matter when that happens. I'm still pissed off.

Noticed this, as well.phineas said:One thing i found funny last night were the people in the game thread crying because Shaw was yelling at the officials all night. "Shut up Shaw!" "ShawFS" "that wasn't a penalty shaw! Quit crying"

And the flags came flying shortly afterward.
Honestly, it’s the PAC 12, we are playing at Stanford, so the Ref’s probably fear more retribution to not getting Shaw’s calls right, and Peterman is fucked from the get go.
Just sayin. . . -

Kwait or Lake said after the game that they employed a "soft coverage" defense be cause of Stanford's tall receivers.
This flies in the face of everything that has made our defense great.
When your gameplan is "not to lose" rather than "to win", you lose every time.
Unfortunately, my guess is they do the same thing against WSU and we get absolutely picked apart
