defense (semi long poast)

This is maybe the most disappointing part of this team. We have no ability to generate big plays on defense because of 2 reasons.

1. We don't take chances

2. We're slow. Yes having guys like Vea and Gaines is fantastic. Most of the time we are stonewalling them. And it means nothing because our lb aren't shooting gaps and making plays in he backfield. Taylor Rapp who's a safety is the only one who has that ability.

Credit to Stanford for playing a mostly clean game. No drops. Costello was accurate. No penalties / none were called (their rt was false starting every play).

The reason why teams like wsu do nnothing against us is because we are uniquely built to beat teams that make mistakes. Wsu will do the same this year turning the ball over and committing penalties. We have no ability to dictate the game. We don't force turnovers. We don't give the offense great field position. We don't get after the quarterback.

There's a lot of work to do on offense but there is still work to do on defense as well

We're starting our 3rd string DBs, so that can't really be helped.

The main problem is outside of Kikaha and Mathis for a short season we have had absolutely zero heat from the edge.

Potatoe? Amandre? Anyone? The interior D can be all world, but it doesn't fucking matter without HEAT FROM THE EDGE.

This is true. Losing your two top cb is devestating. The lack of speed tho especially at lb is really concerning.

One thing i found funny last night were the people in the game thread crying because Shaw was yelling at the officials all night. "Shut up Shaw!" "ShawFS" "that wasn't a penalty shaw! Quit crying"

I wish Petersen would get after the officials like that. If you can dictate the calls they make, you do it. Standing on the sideline with a scowl on your face doesn't scare anyone but the pussies on your team

D weakness was edge contain and height. Cant teach a 5'9" guy to play like he's 6'6" or out jump a tall guy. Can't coach height. Those 3rd down high softball throws were our death knell. Outside contain has been a problem the entire season. Freeman exposed it in the Quack game for all to see on a consistent basis. I don't blame Vea much he was reaching around an O linemen and grabbed what he could unfortunately it was a face mask. Stanford couldn't get a flag thrown at them most of the night. Holding was common but not called. If we thought about doing anything that even resembled a penalty they threw a flag. Needed to dial up a few blitzes as well but Costello got rid of it pretty quick most of the time. Pissed me off. Our O could not get going in the 2nd. O line got leaky and there were a few crappy play calls but execution wasn't consistent so play calling doesn't matter when that happens. I'm still pissed off.

    Noticed this, as well.

And the flags came flying shortly afterward.

Honestly, it’s the PAC 12, we are playing at Stanford, so the Ref’s probably fear more retribution to not getting Shaw’s calls right, and Peterman is fucked from the get go.

    Just sayin. . .

It starts and ends with talent evaluation and recruiting.

Hercules Mata’afa wasn’t even offered a scholarship to Washington even though he showed early interest.

This is lazy and bullshit analysis. Hercules was a borderline 2 star/ 3 star prospect whose other offers were the Beavers and New Mexico State. If we would have offered that guy, people on this bored would be losing their shit.

Cliff Notes version: I watched Miami last night and realized that's the defense we want to have, but don't. Maybe we should try like a turn over salmon or something.

He was a first team fr-All American at 18. He started in the PAC-12 as a true freshman with 10 tfl’s 6 sacks and a forced fumble. . He is a first team All American as a true junior, Now. When he lines up everybody knows whats coming. Every team tries to double him. Nobody can stop him.

He had few offers because teams were lazy recruiters. His talent was obvious the moment he stepped on the field. You think Fetters flew to Lahaina to rate him?

Hercules Mata’afa would have red shirted his freshman year at Washington, had Peterman *not* fucked up his recruiting.

Whether it was laziness, severe talent mis-evaluation, fear of message board skewering by some dude named bannanasandblondes or Abundance, Peterman flat out missed.

UW would be a better defense with him right now, as well as next season.

... and Falk’s only offer was to Jason Gesser at Idaho, pulled when Gesser got fired. Ended up taking away the schollie from a 4-star kid in practice.

You don’t think Brownsox could have benefitted from that kind of competitor chasing his ass?

Peterman fucked up Falk’s walk-on, too.

Yes. They turned out to be gpod. In general, however, offering guys whose best offer is the coogs is not a sound recruiting strategy. This is 20/20 hindsight doogman shit

Also, there are plenty of things you can say about this staff in terms of where they need to improve. Saying they have trouble identifying under the radar talent is not even close to being on the list.
