Also think of it this way... nothing about UW was cool in any way, shape, or form when these kids were growing up. We've only been an elite program again for 1 year. Hell I graduated high school in 2013 and barely knew shit about UW football because they were so irrelevant.jhfstyle24 said:

Meanwhile... USC is USC. And when you look at a team like Oregon, despite how easy it is for us to laugh about their 100000 uniform combinations, that kind of stuff is EXACTLY what middle school age kids find cool and edgy. The class of 2018 was in middle school and early high school while Oregon was dominant from 2010-14, which makes those kids (like Tre'Shaun) fall in love with Oregon and dream about playing for Oregon when they grow up... not UW.
And like @Mad_Son said... kids are really stupid. It's harder for them to think about a college choice logically and get over their biases for USC and Oregon and others like that. So even though UW may be a better option, and a lot of kids like Elijah Molden see that, many are still drawn to those schools that were popular and cool while they grew up. -
First of all, I think they're all stupid. I agree with everything you said. Regardless, here is my guess.
sarrell was enamored with stanford for a long time. They have a reputation as being the best OL school on the west coast. It's going to take a while to overcome that. Remember that UW only had one good season (last year) before he had to choose a school. By that time it was too late.
marlon is a lying sack of sh*t.
The edge pass rusher thing really pisses me off. I don't get how we whiff on so many guys. But I think the reason is that DL is arguably the hardest and MOST IMPORTANT position to recruit so there is a lot of competition for those players. AND, we don't grow a lot of stellar DLs in the State of Washington. We often have to go and get them elsewhere.
Three years ago Petersen made one of the smartest statements I've heard from him (and he's said a lot of smart things): "Bringing it (UW) back to a championship level will be dictated by our ability to recruit and to develop defensive linemen..."

I think we can consistently get great players at every position, but I guess it's going to take a little more time.

If I was an elite high school recruit out of California and knowing what I know now with my life experience I would go to UW in a heartbeat. My 17-18 year old self? UW would probably be 4th or 5th on my list.
With that being said I pretty much agree with what everyone else has been saying. Parents telling kids to do what they want.. parents not existing in their kids life.. UW not being relevant nationally.. party life over football and/or education.. edginess over self growth.. listening to coaches recruiting lies vs. observing the the truth of the program with their own eyes.. the list goes on.
I think these questions relate a lot to another.. Why do programs like UCLA and Tennessee recruit top level talent and continue to struggle immensely with on the field performance? -

I hear everyone on the coeds, the we? sucked forever, and I used those guys as examples of recruiting losses, but we have Petersen who all these kids know, and we’re getting ridiculous (for UW) attention from kids from TX who should have zero natural interest in UW. You have straight up maulers in Bolton and Curne committed (for now), and Togiagi from fucking ID can’t see the writing on the wall? He shouldn’t fucking require Malloe to explain it. Watching Virta bench press his guy into the punter or AZ 187 on Phil from accounting or guys getting drafted into the league should be enough -
I don't get the hand wringing. We are getting more and more of our #1 targets every year and the kids we don't get either go to USC, were recruited by Malloe, or both.
