2016 breakout: The Huskies began last season ranked 14th in the AP poll despite coming off a 7-6 season and having not been ranked better than 15th in any AP top 25 since 2002. There was faith in Chris Petersen, in his third season with a more experienced roster, and the Huskies lived up to the hype and more. They won the Pac-12 for the first time since 2000, going 12-2 with a playoff bid. They broke the Stanford/Oregon stranglehold on the conference by crushing both teams, with an outstanding season and a superb sophomore effort from QB Jake Browning before losing to Alabama in the Peach Bowl.

Why they'll be better: Browning actually injured his shoulder in November and played through pain late in the season. He underwent surgery in January and should hopefully be back to the player we saw much of the 2016 season. The offense returns plenty of experience, including RB Myles Gaskin, OT Trey Adams and WR Dante Pettis, and there's a lot to like about the defensive front, especially with LB Azeem Victor returning from a season-ending injury.

Why they'll be worse: Browning loses his best offensive weapon in speedster John Ross, whose departure also deprives the Huskies of a standout kick returner. The losses may be felt more on defense, where the secondary loses stars Budda Baker, Sidney Jones and Kevin King, with all-conference DT Elijah Qualls also gone.

2017 stock: Slightly down. Washington likely won't be the Pac-12 favorite, but it will be the Pac-12 North favorite. With Browning back, the offense will be excellent, and there is time to rebuild the defensive backfield thanks to a helpful schedule. Washington doesn't have to play Darnold and USC in the regular season; it has a laughable nonconference schedule featuring Rutgers, Montana and Fresno State; and it doesn't face Josh Rosen until Oct. 28 and Luke Falk until Nov. 25. Stock is "slightly down" only because repeating as a playoff team will be difficult, but the Huskies should be in a similar ballpark.
