I think there are way too many under-qualified students at universities. I'd love to see Community Colleges fully funded and offer training in trade professions. More people would end up with a degree/certification in something they can use.
I really like the German model. In 9th grade you split off into two different schools. Either you will on to college prep until 13th grade (essentially earning your AA), or you go to a job training high school until 12th grade and learn whatever trade you decide on. Graduates either go to University or start an apprenticeship. -

I'm in my mid-thirties, my parents told me to focus on school so I don't become like them. We were far from poor, but they all physically worked and made an honest living.

By the way, the lack of understanding of basic economics amongst some in here whom I assume graduated from college is a bit stunning. If you don't understand that free money in the form of government backed loans inflates higher education costs, then you're either ignorant or just plain stupid. If you further fail to understand that free money and misinformation has artificially created demand for indiscriminate college educations and in turn has diluted their value, then you're either ignorant or just plain stupid.
What you choose to study and how you get there matters. Same applies for the trades. The "investment" in education has to come from the individual, along with the associated financial responsibility. If your education decisions have economic consequences, you'll choose more wisely and you'll work harder to ensure you can get into more competitive fields. Those who find a way other than free money, work hard enough to qualify for scholarships, serve in the military (GI bill) and/or work their way through college or trade school to pay for most or all of their education tend to be far more successful than those simply signing for loans they'll never repay. It's high time we got back that model. -
Mostly agree except for your last point. That depends on what "the suit and tie" is doing. Fields in medicine, engineering, computer science, finance, accounting and law, among others, have the potential for high value even when working for someone else. In all cases, for people in professional or skilled trade positions, the path to independence is there, all can become their own boss, own or partner in their own practice, firm, company, etc. Ultimately it comes back to the individual.Mosster47 said:

Last time I checked we don't outsource auto mechanics, electricians, plumbers, carpenters etc. Not only are those outsource proof, they are basically automation proof too.
