The Pac-12 is better this year than it has been for quite some time.

If Sefo doesn't go down in Ann Arbor they finish that game off and you have two 11-1 teams in the CCG. That's essentially swapping UW and CU for what Oregon ans Stanford have been over the last sevenish years.

The best team in the conference today isn't even in the CCG. When has that ever happened before? Hasn't all or most of the CCG's had a gimme of UCLA or Arizona in it?

Wazzu is as good as they have been since Doba's first year. Stanford still has 8 or 9 wins. Utah has 8 or 9 wins.

Sure, the Oregons, Cal, the Arizonas, and UCLA are hot garbage but so were the Washingtons, CU, Cal, and USC to an extent the last sevenish years.

There are three teams right now that could play with any team in the nation in the conference today. It has been a long time since that was a reality at the end of the season. 2000 maybe?

    Generally agree.

SEC West is far and away the best division in FBS because Bama is in it. The rest of the SEC West is pretty decent though. But the SEC East is a joke.

Sagarin Conf ratings bear this out.

Sagarin has an irrational love of the Pac-12.

Half of the Pac-12 North is Oregon, Oregon State, and Cal. No fucking way is that division better than the B1G East.

I'd also take the ACC Coastal over the Pac 12 North.

    Make up your mind, Boobs.

I seem to remember you saying (after watching the pillowfight in Columbus) that tOSU and Michigan would be average teams in the P12 North.

Ergo, if your best teams are average - you are not good.

Take out the middle team (Indiana) and compare head to head:

Washington is probably better than Penn State
    LOL Ohio State destroys Cuog
    Harbaugh bitchslaps Shaw

    In the who cares half:
Maryland slightly better than Oregon State
Michigan State v Cal is a toss up
    Oregon destroys Rutgers

I'm calling it 3-2 for the B1G East, but the difference at the top half really matters. Sagarin fucking stupid lets Rutgers drag down the whole division more than it should.

Most importantly, three B1G East teams could have gone 5-0 against the North like Washington did.

The Sagarin Ratings predicted 73% of all games correctly and had a 2% edge ATS. That's pretty good.

ESPN's FPI did even better ATS, with an edge of over 3%.

Here are the averages per FPI:

    SEC W 16.27
    SEC 11.46
    P12 N 10.57
    ACC A 10.54
    P12 9.93
    ACC 9.51
    P12 S 9.28
    B1G E 9.20
    ACC C 8.49
    BXII 8.36
    B1G 7.36
    SEC E 6.66
    B1G W 5.51

On average, the SEC is the best conference and the SEC West is by far the best division. But that is 100% due to the outlier effect of Bama. If you take the median (a good way to limit the outlier effect) FPI ratings for the SEC and the Pac 12, they are virtually identical (the Pac-12's is actually slightly higher).

Absolutely. Bama is 2004 USC good. No one is even close to them.

When USC was incredible the perception was the Pac-10 was awful. When Bama is incredible the SEC is awesome. Both are wrong.

Cal was most definitely "close" to USC in 2004. Cal outgained USC's vaunted offensive juggernaut 424-205 and was in a position to wiin the game with 1st&goal at USC's 9 with 1:30 left, then Aaron Rodgers threw an incomplete pass to Noah Smith in the right corner of the end zone, had a shovel pass play to Arrington blown up for a sack, threw a potential TD pass through Geoff McArthur's hands, then threw to a wide open spot in the end zone where Johnathan Makkonen would have been had he not slipped on the cut.

Washington is going to do for football what North Carolina State and Villanova did for the Big Dance
