The electoral college is genius. One of its brilliant features is that it minimizes the damage from ballot stuffing. The results under our current system do not equal the results under another. For example a voter in a state dominated by one party with no contentious local races or ballot issues may stay home knowing full well their vote isn't needed. There is more incentive to get out the vote in swing states because a single vote has more potential to swing an election there.
