Why shouldn't they go out and protest? The Republicans called Obama a traitor and a secret Muslim, so you can get fucked if you're going to turn around and ask for people to not insult Herr Trump.

The electoral college is a reactionary institution invented by the Framers as a tool to maintain white supremacy in the slave states.
Trump didn't even get as many votes as Romney, so fuck him.
Uh...maybe to grant slave states more power in executive elections, but I am not sure it was per se to maintain white supremacy in slave states.
And that still wouldn't mean there are not benefits to an electoral college that were not necessarily planned or foreseen. I guess I am also sympathetic to the Fredrick Douglass interpretation of the constitution.
These kids are pissed no one is going to pay off they're student loans. Free shit just ended! They're going to have to get by with a PhD in African Interpretive Dance, Gopher Husbandry or White Privilege.

It gave the slave states outsized governmental power in relation to their population, which they used to protect slave labor from Northern reformers.

It was a compromise (see also: Great Compromise/Sherman's Compromise) to keep the republic together. The smaller states understood Boston, New York, Philly could muscle them into insignificance. The larger states understood they needed the labor/output of the smaller agricultural states so they could continue their manufacturing and trade overseas. Not all that much different than the resource-based heartland today. The larger states knew they couldn't survive without the smaller states and vice versa.
But like always, 'progressives' want to view things through their tired injustice/woe is me prism. Fuck that. Slavery was abolished 150 years ago. Get over it. I (we?) had nothing to do with it. Until they quit whining about shit from 6 generations ago, they'll get the same response from all that red on the electoral map. They just don't care about the political elites or their ideological spin. They care about their families, their paychecks and their beliefs. That's it. Period. In that order. Progressives have the order of priorities reversed. They Trump voters don't want to be told what to believe or how to believe it or how to express their beliefs by some far off central government or talking head 'expert' on TV who hasn't done an honest day's work in years.
The US system isn't perfect but this election was a lesson in how the disenfranchised can flex their muscles a bit. Don't bitch because the Dems couldn't put together a coalition within the rules of the election and put forth one of the most hated people in the country over the last 25 years. Or that their candidate just flat got out-worked and displayed unbelievable hubris and condescension toward the voters. Their collective narcissism ignored the reality that they put forth a piece of shit criminal* as their candidate for the most powerful person in the world. When they stakes are that high, you put forth someone with a chance to win. Hilary was tainted from day one and her downside risk too great.

The electoral college is genius. One of its brilliant features is that it minimizes the damage from ballot stuffing. Of course ballot stuffing machine-Democrats would hate this.
Republicans have lost 6 of the last 7 popular votes.
Games won > total runs scored
The results under our current system do not equal the results under another. For example a voter in a state dominated by one party with no contentious local races or ballot issues may stay home knowing full well their vote isn't needed. There is more incentive to get out the vote in swing states because a single vote has more potential to swing an election there.

But how is the electoral college fucking retarded?
