Smiff on a hot seat?

Tough-sell, Pup. The two aren't inextricably linked. If a "process of elimination" of bad plays that never should've been called counts toward "getting better" then we've got ourselves an FCS play caller, if even that, getting paid 440k a year to learn on the job. Fuck.That.Shit. Double-reverses and shit like that reek of fear and lack of faith in your players to execute proper plays. If my team loses, I don't want them losing like chicken-shit pussies who shoot their own feet off half the time. The only way they win 50-50 games against tough opponents is by beating other teams straight-up in the strength, endurance and toughness departments. And Smith is none of those.puppylove_sugarsteel said:Funny how the offense, and Smith's playcalling got better as the freshmen and sophomores gained experience. But lets not look at reality. The best thing that came out of the ASU loss was lending our playbook to Oregon for the Alamo Bowl.RoadDawg55 said:
Maybe it was the competition, but the offense looked a lot better when they actually ran the ball early in the game and stuck with it. I'm somewhat optimistic that the ASU game was a turning point, but I can also easily see Petersen and Smith falling in love with an improved Browning and airing it out. Run heavy balance is what this team needs. Just stop over complicating it.godawgst said:
Post of the day. Gaskin and the improved ol play will allow us to beat a lot of shitty teams on the sched (wildcats, beavs, cougs, bears and the 1-aa non conf. scrimmages) because of the diff. in jimmies and joes coupled with death row defense.TurdBuffer said:@Gladstone @RoadDawg55: I wish JS were gone as well, but I think @HuskyClaws and @bananasnblondes are right. In Peterson's eyes, this is probably JS's no more excuses year. I predict his play calling will again be shitty and fail to exploit his players' skills. But the improved play from the O-Line and skill players on offense will mask JS's failings just enough to make retaining him a close-call for Peterson, even though it shouldn't be. People will focus on yards, points and averages, which hide shit plays like 1 yard bubble screens, 2 yard dives, and dropped passes that count against QB stats more than the shit receivers or bad play calls. Smith will reap the benefits of what the O does next fall, instead of being judged by all the lost opportunities he'll leave all over the field, all season long.
We haven't won a 50-50 game yet under coach Pete against a team with equal or better talent outside USC last year and we all know what was going on down there so this is where Smith has to get over the hump. I don't think you can do it by using the "random playcall generator" as it forces him to piss away plays, which lead to series and ultimately games.
We will know if Smith is retained in 2017 based on the Stanford, Duck, Utah, USC, ASU games. Must win the three home games and hopefully at least split the road games.
offensive coaches mantra for 2016 should be "be stubborn with it" (it being what is working, or more ideally being committed to the run) -

That's the thing. I'm very skeptical about 2016 being that much better on the offensive side.Gladstone said:

Pumpy, on the other hand, seems to think that Smith is getting better and he's going to magically call better plays once the players mature and become more experienced.

I won't. They are what they are. I'm not about to crown their asses until they prove otherwise. It's up to CP to fucking wake up and do what it takes to win on offense.puppylove_sugarsteel said:

Pussyfaggotginer Smiff ain't gonna do it. -
My main concern is the 2 minute drill. Smith wants my respect. Fucking earn it in the 2 minute drill and win the game. Prove you can run a hurry up with urgency or grind out 7 minutes depending on the situation.
Show some fucking command of the pace of the game and understanding of the personnel. You have a good D backing you up, be confident, aggressive and don't punt on 4th and 1 on their side of the field.
Earn your extension. There's enough talent to be successful.
Training wheels are off and I'm pushing you down the hill. Win or get fucked. -
Still have a feeling that Pete fires him mid season, not sure why he didn't fire him with Pease and bring in another coach, fuck it , sell his couch and assume OC duties.Doogles said:My main concern is the 2 minute drill. Definitely would have been much better to jettison Smiff at the conclusion of 2015. Instead, now we're going to risk another "throw-away season" on offense in 2016.NeGgaPlEaSe said:

There have been some two minute drills that have been complete abortions. Guys aren't even lining up correctly and look like they had no clue what to do. It has honestly looked like we don't even practice a two minute drill even though every fucking team in the country goes over these mock scenarios every week in practice.

1/2 of the schools in fucking Wesco could have ran a better 2 minute drill. Go rewatch that Oregon game if you have the stomach for it. It was terrible.Doogles said:My main concern is the 2 minute drill. Smith wants my respect. Fucking earn it in the 2 minute drill and win the game. That's what you do against a true freshman qb making his first start in college on the road. Stick 7-8 in the box and make Jake beat you.puppylove_sugarsteel said:

Three examples that scare me about Smith. Against Cal you run it down their throat with D Wash for a td in 2nd qtr, next series pass pass pass punt. Against Utah late in 2nd you get down inside the 25 with majority of run plays. Go pass, double reverse with Hall who throws it out of bounds before he gets sacked, pass attempt Jake gets sacked. Fg was good, but made it more difficult than necessary. Against ASU late in 3th you have a chance to go up by 10 and two scores. Drive it to their 18. First down run, 2nd inc. pass. One thing you CAN NOT DO is take a sack. Jake showed a habit (due to being a freshman imo) all year of holding onto ball to long. So what does Smith call? A pass, which of course Jake takes a ten yard sack, makes it a 45 yard fg and of course fg was no good. A good OC knows the 3 points are more important than anything else so you run the ball with Gaskin, get what you can and trust your defense.
My main concern with Smith is in his desire to be 50/50 run and pass and that overrides how the game is being played out. In the mountain west Boise didn't have to worry about it as their talent would ultimately win out. In this conf that shit matters.

Amen @godawgst. No two-minute drill worth a shit, too many stalls inside the red zone, ultra-predictable weak QB sneak plays...Fuck. It did improve during the season, but started out so fucking bad, with lazy-ass WRs who couldn't catch or block. Fuck. It has to be better next year, but the fanbase and CP should be predisposed to JS's departure, because he's shown absolutely nothing to indicate he's up to the job. We expect players to learn on the job, but not coaches earning 440k.

Does anyone believe Smith could modify a game plan at half time to take advantage of defensive tendencies?
-
It seems like Petersen wants a younger guy who he can control and manipulate as opposed to a seasoned 48 year old coordinator (who would probably make $700,000) who might butt heads with him.
-
If that's the case, then CP is a weak-dick. He shouldn't want a lapdog. He should want someone working for him to have his own ideas and challenge CP from time to time.Fire_Marshall_Bill said:It seems like Petersen wants a younger guy who he can control and manipulate as opposed to a seasoned 48 year old coordinator (who would probably make $700,000) who might butt heads with him.
Oh yeah, the OC should also be able to coach the offense on his own. The head coach should be the big picture guy. -
I agree. He's shortchanging the whole program if it's true. I get the impression that Smith is almost like a mentor of his who is struggling to figure out what works while dealing with some legitimate disadvantages. I don't follow the program closely enough to know that for sure, but just based on observations, the scenario seems at least very plausible. It's not acceptable for a guy to go through learning pains. Go do that at Idaho State.PurpleBaze said:

I don't hate Smiff as much as some here, but he's a Mountain West coordinator. The offense struggled two years straight and it was more than bad QBs and young QBs and young lines etc. There were too many mind numbing decisions. -

Straight out of the doog playbook: blame the players to excuse shitty coaching.puppylove_sugarsteel said:Funny how the offense, and Smith's playcalling got better as the freshmen and sophomores gained experience. But lets not look at reality. Just blame playcalling.

It's the tendency of JS, as it was under Willingham, which was shades of Jack Patera and the Seahawks in '77, that when basic fundamental offensive plays aren't being properly executed, he'll try something even more complicated to try to trick the opponent. Problem is, opposing D's, after stuffing UW on 1st and 2nd down, expect the complicated, trick play, and usually hold it to a loss or no gain, IF we don't turn the ball over, fumble the snap, or some other shit. This is basic ABC's of life shit that Smith doesn't seem to get. When his shit isn't working, instead of tweaking or getting back to basics, he goes all-in and completely shit's the bed.
This is why over-achiever former players don't make good coaches. They confuse passion with precision, when the two are - for the vast majority - opposing forces. -
Browning and Gaskin will make him look better than mediocre
