Smiff on a hot seat?

This might be the first time in NCAA history that not having a long term contract @ OC will improve recruiting.

Good, but not good enough. There is no reasonable business justification for him to still be employed. He is a poor recruiter, doesn't develop players, is a spectacularly terrible in game coach, and was thoroughly unqualified for the job to begin with. His retention is a glaring, borderline unforgivable black mark on Petersen, who has made countless strides on other fronts.

Kwiatkowski is the biggest bargain in CFB at 600k/year

Between firing Pease and this, I have faith that Petersen can make the tough decisions.
I still think that he should have fired Smiff after last season, but I could also see how Petersen gave him a slight benefit of the doubt and one more 'prove it' year. -

I think the horrible play of the WRs, combined with having a true frosh QB saved Smith's job. Pete is essentially saying "now that Pease is gone, you have no more excuses."

Nothing says making tough decisions like the passive aggressive decision to not extend the contract of an under-performing turd bucket -

Go watch the "hurry up" offense against Oregon. View the Cal playcalling. Watch the last 2/3 of the game vs Arizona State.
Get that doog shit out of here. He should have been canned immediately after the season. -
Smith gets too much heat imo because it's Petersen's offense. He still sucks though and I get mad every time I look at that mortician fuck. There isn't one redeeming quality about him.

2017 will be special

Especially since Petersen is an offensive coach.RoadDawg55 said:Smith gets too much heat imo because it's Petersen's offense. He still sucks though and I get mad every time I look at that mortician fuck. There isn't one redeeming quality about him.
We mocked Sark for ignoring the defense and special teams.
But Pete is an offensive coach. As CEO, he should be able to most effectively step in and fix that side of the ball better than any other aspect of the team. -
@Gladstone @RoadDawg55: I wish JS were gone as well, but I think @HuskyClaws and @bananasnblondes are right. In Peterson's eyes, this is probably JS's no more excuses year. I predict his play calling will again be shitty and fail to exploit his players' skills. But the improved play from the O-Line and skill players on offense will mask JS's failings just enough to make retaining him a close-call for Peterson, even though it shouldn't be. People will focus on yards, points and averages, which hide shit plays like 1 yard bubble screens, 2 yard dives, and dropped passes that count against QB stats more than the shit receivers or bad play calls. Smith will reap the benefits of what the O does next fall, instead of being judged by all the lost opportunities he'll leave all over the field, all season long.

He should have been gone last year.

The fact Smiff is still here is chinexcusable

In the sec, or the upper 1/3 of the big ten, he would be making $200,000-300,000 more a year for the defense he's put out there.CokeGreaterThanPepsi said:Kwiatkowski is the biggest bargain in CFB at 600k/year

Gaskin saved his job. If he didn't emerge and the offense from the Boise State game continued he would have been fired.PurpleJ said:He should have been gone last year.

Post of the day. Gaskin and the improved ol play will allow us to beat a lot of shitty teams on the sched (wildcats, beavs, cougs, bears and the 1-aa non conf. scrimmages) because of the diff. in jimmies and joes coupled with death row defense.TurdBuffer said:@Gladstone @RoadDawg55: I wish JS were gone as well, but I think @HuskyClaws and @bananasnblondes are right. We haven't won a 50-50 game yet under coach Pete against a team with equal or better talent outside USC last year and we all know what was going on down there so this is where Smith has to get over the hump. I don't think you can do it by using the "random playcall generator" as it forces him to piss away plays, which lead to series and ultimately games.
We will know if Smith is retained in 2017 based on the Stanford, Duck, Utah, USC, ASU games. Must win the three home games and hopefully at least split the road games.
offensive coaches mantra for 2016 should be "be stubborn with it" (it being what is working, or more ideally being committed to the run) -
Maybe it was the competition, but the offense looked a lot better when they actually ran the ball early in the game and stuck with it. I'm somewhat optimistic that the ASU game was a turning point, but I can also easily see Petersen and Smith falling in love with an improved Browning and airing it out. Run heavy balance is what this team needs. Just stop over complicating it.godawgst said:

Funny how the offense, and Smith's playcalling got better as the freshmen and sophomores gained experience. But lets not look at reality. Just blame playcalling.

His play-calling "got better" when they finally decided to run Gaskin more and "be stubborn with the run".puppylove_sugarsteel said:Funny how the offense, and Smith's playcalling got better as the freshmen and sophomores gained experience. But lets not look at reality. Just blame playcalling.
Smith still sucks donkey dicks. He's a fucking pussy. -
"They" decided to be stubborn with run? Who's they? How about the freshmen and sophomores on the line got better and allowed "they" to run gaskin more as season wore on.. "They" could have ran gaskin all night in Boise, wouldnt have done much good.PurpleBaze said:

Boise wasn't the only game they gave Gaskin only 12-15 touches.
"They" is both Petersen and Smith. Can't let CP off the hook when it comes to the offensive woes in 2015. But, if Smith was an actual OC and had a set of balls on him, maybe he could have talked his boss into "being stubborn with the run" earlier in the season.
Gaskin is a special back and he would have been a lot more effective with 20-25 carries a game. He could have handled it.
"THEY" better not fuck things up with play-calling in 2016 and leave winnable games on the table.
