Jack Lockner retires

Good for him ...
Made money ...
Getting out with relatively good health ...
Tells me that at least one of his injuries in Tennessee had to be severe enough for him to question whether or not he wanted to keep taking the punishment.
I'm not a Locker hater at all ... he had his warts as a QB but he also was an exceptional talent in many regards. -
We have had this on good authroity and knew he was going to retire a month ago. Just didn't want to say anything on the boards.

The day the Doogles died. -
I will never understand the hatred for Jake ...
He had his flaws ...
But I never once thought that the pinning of anything on him was worthwhile. He came through in big situations far more often than he failed. -

Steve McNair is rolling in his grave.

He made $12.5M with his rookie deal. When you factor in taxes, agent fees, etc., he probably is walking away with over $5M easily.
I'm sure he'll have some kind of tie-in to the UW one way or another. I don't think he'll be hurting for money. He'll always be viewed fondly by the UW community. -
Seems like locker is pretty well educated and smart kid, so that 5 could have grown greatly over the last 4-5 years.Tequilla said:He made $12.5M with his rookie deal. When you factor in taxes, agent fees, etc., he probably is walking away with over $5M easily.

Obligatory: take classes with Jack H Lockner and then pop off!

No wonder Locker hasn't won since high school. Retires at 26 after a few rough years.
Yeah, good for him to find someone dumb enough to pick him 8th. If you feel that way, you might as well give Jamarcus Russell and every other QB bust props then too. -

Also a 110% predictable response from you ...
Some shit is bigger than the game ... and I actually respect someone more from walking away and leaving millions on the table when his heart isn't in it than hanging around and continuing to cash them checks.

The heart not being in it is the exact problem and why he's never won anything.Tequilla said:

Maybe b/c tyrone was a coach? If locker had chip kelly as a coach he could have been light years better in college.ThomasFremont said:

Locker at Oregon w/ Chip woulda been a Natty for the Ducks.FreeChavez said:

He would have gotten hurt. If he happened to stay healthy (hypothetically speaking because we know he wouldn't), he would still fire passes over the head of open Oregon receivers.ThomasFremont said:

You think he's smart because he's white and doesn't get in trouble.FreeChavez said:

People that run from problem to problem and never stick anything out ... no problem giving those people shit.
People that sabotage their own career (see Russell, JaMarcus) ... no problem in that regard.
That's not the case with Locker at all. The smart money would have been him leaving after his junior year ... instead he stayed in school.
He could have easily sat on the sidelines for another couple of years and collected another $4-6M easily but holding a clipboard. He had the sack to say that that lifestyle wasn't for him anymore. Hard not to respect that.
Locker's had injuries to his shoulder (numerous times), his ankle, his hip, and his knee. I don't blame him at all for valuing quality of life over the next paycheck. If I was in his same situation, I would choose the same thing. If I had enough money to cover the rest of my life in the bank account, there's no question that I'd prioritize quality of life over making more money. What's the point?
If you've been around any number of people that have played sports in college or professionally, one of the common things you'll hear from many of them is that it changes from being a sport and for fun and instead turns into a job. The joy of playing starts to go away ... particularly if you are someone that is on the fringes.
I respect the people that know when it is time to move on. I wish I was better at recognizing that and then acting on it when I realize it. Too often I find myself in a position where I'm optimistic that something will change knowing that the odds of it changing are slim.
