We can for a lot more money... do you want the price of goods to go up? After we just had record inflation? Do you want Trump to have a Democrat house and senate? Because that is what will happen in 2 years if he does it. And then a Democrat president in 28...
Totally and completely depends on the good. If it’s something generic and elastic with substitutes that don’t have tariffs the market won’t support a price increase to consumers. The exporter eats the tariff or loses market share. French wine would probably increase as it’s less elastic and no pure substitute exists.
The tariff inflation fear mongering is way overblown for most products.
If tariffs cause inflation, why didn’t we have inflation after Trump put them on with our largest trading partner? And why didn’t Biden reverse them as an easy win to lower costs to consumers in 2022?
While Trump has repeatedly asserted that ‘tariffs’ is “the most beautiful word” in the dictionary, economists and US importers have warned that the consequences of his plan – if it’s enforced – will be ugly.
The US is the most asymmetrically tariffed nation on earth. We were promised by the experts this would make goods cheaper. Instead it's mostly depressed wages while the elites have captured the majority of profits from cost savings on labor. All while performing rent seeking using the government.
I'm very pro free trade. We are 1,000 miles away from that right now.
Targeted tariffs and bilateral negotiating makes sense when you are the 800lb gorilla in the room.

At what price? Are you prepared for the high increase in price on goods? I sure don't want that.
Why did Colombia cave at the threat?
At least let Trump fuck with these people before surrendering
Let the democrats cry about it

Stop printing money.
Easy concept.
Yes stop printing money... but raising tarrifs only raises the cost of the product.
What’s an example of an elastic good that we import from Europe where the price would go up because of lack of competition?
Ozempic maybe.
So you think putting tarrifs on won't raise the price of the good?

The fear mongering is designed to get the US to not do it
So…
Who is designing this tariff fear mongering?
Who do you think?
A simple Google search to see the list of tariffs on US exports gets article after article on imports and how Trump will ruin the economy
Garbage

Many to choose from Ern’s main source of Leftist news. Here’s a good one.
Every other country’s tariffs are fine, but if the USA tries to mot get fucked over and over, it’s going to be ugly!
I’m so scared.

Because it was one partner... but the prices of those goods went up.... same with steel. Prices went up for homes as well as others....
Fine do it and then lose in 26 and 28 when prices go up. Brilliant

You’re a more of a pessimist than me. We have no clue what negotiations will be held and trade agreements signed over the next 6 months.
Continuing to get ripped off everywhere is a winning plan.

If they do the tarrifs and prices go up yes I am very pessimistic on 26 and 28
