I think a format of 6 teams. Top 2 get byes, prevents the 1 in a million scenario where the 6th ranked team might still be best and get left out. That still stretches it most years, but is still way better than 12.
yeah that’s what I was thinking. Stanford couldn’t beat anyone this year but this would have been a perfect good and greased ASU team to knock someone off

While we're multiple levels deep in the hypotheticals, Oregon would have played a Pac-12 schedule. Guaranteed loss at Stanford or in the desert.
The only problem is giving byes to Boise State and to an extent ASU. Boise St. especially didn't earn that in the slightest.

I don't think a second game between them would look the same as the preseason game. It took a while for the quook mercenaries to get their reads down.
