I'm just amazed any of them survived the war and then lived on till 106. Once our boys got their reads down, they shot down and killed most of the 1st gen of Japanese naval pilots which was a big problem since they weren't able to replace them easily.

I thought the same thing. First the attrition and then the old age. This dude was born in 1918 and would’ve been 23-24 in December 41.
Good clean living and the element of surprise go a long way, I guess.
