Who would have made the best Captain Willard in an alternate universe?
The below actors were all either offered and/or considered by Francis Ford Coppola for the role.

McQueen was my 1a choice. None of the rest.
Sheen was better than any of them would've been though. Perfectly cast. Replacing him would've been nearly as egregious as replacing Robert Duvall.
Yeah I'm none of the above
Sheen was that roll
Clearly. He was willing to almost die for getting the roll right.
But still I think Steve McQueen or Jack as Capt Willard would have made for an epic movie.
With the way it was presented as a narrative, Sheen completely nailed it…tough guy, focused, composed soldier externally, and as narrator showed his doubt, vulnerability, and fear. McQ only one on the list for me, possibly a more seasoned Harrison Ford could have made a run at it…
Uhm yeah, looking Sheen was perfect but Coppola wanted McQueen badly and I think he would have probably nailed the role as well.
who is Captain Willard?
McQueen was too famous for the role in my opinion. It was a character actor film. Remarkable casting. Doog it up Larry not Laurence Fishborne for one. And of course Duvall
Brando was the star. And hardly had any screen time
wasn’t Harvey Keitel supposed to be Willard but was fired?
Gun to my head, I go with Nolte.
I was surprised I was the only one who could see him in the role. I think it's a natural fit. I'm not saying I'm even a big Nolte guy or anything like that.
This is the best Captain Willard.
You're correct. I didn't get my reads down before completing my list.
I’m gonna need a minute…I was a freshman in college 45 years ago…JFC
I was in Kindergarten.
