Police car camera is on when they are driving. Records all the time but only keeps the prior 30 seconds. If the overhead lights are activated or there is an accident it keeps that 30 seconds as part of the recording. It's another layer of recordings. A body camera on inside the car doesn't see much mostly just the dashboard. Electronics? Cops work radios, MDT (computer), overhead lights, spot light, phone etc. One must be a hell of a multitasker when it gets busy! They pretty much are recorded all the time. If not by their own equipment by another officers equipment often from another agency. Don't know what advancements have been made since to equipment I've been out for 8 years.
Yup and that multi tasking is why it should always be on... that way you don't forget to turn it on or "forget" on purpose.... sure 99.9999% of the video will be useless, and could be discarded quickly, but having that video when needed would be a good thing.
That's the job. Loved the job. Don't have to hear me talk to my wife while I'm at work. Hear me shit, piss, cough, curse about other department members etc. All of us already went through and extensive background investigation, psychiatric testing and evaluation, academy, field training, ongoing training, carry a gun 24/7 camera.
Call me when you can drive a pursuit while smoking a cigarette, drinking coffee, working the radio and computer. Make me toss my coffee and it'll go worse for ya!
At any rate we do still have privacy rights. They just want to know you're awake.

Sled, what are you afraid of? Why are you so against cameras?
How about just write eyeroll instead of wasting bandwidth on stupid gifs?
I'm for cameras. Just not every second.
I see you don't complain about the far left government…
If it's not every second then you will have the bad cops mistakenly turn them off.
I complain about the leftist government all the time Sled.
Not true. I did this for a living.
Not true? There has been a few times already it was "mistakenly " turned off.
Not happening.
should happen...
again what are you scared of?
I have a camera on me 247 for work so it isn't like I'm being a hypocrite.
What do you do?
I already mentioned I work for the railroad.
So you have a camera on you as you drive the train?
Yup, also can't have any electronic devices on while moving.

Can't be discarded has to be kept for years. We don't carry hazardous waste or explosives so we can't kill entire cities.
Nope, but you can shoot someone and throw them in jail.

Cool, I've seen enough crap and personally experienced enough that I don't trust them any more... Sadly, the police have earned their reputation...
Not all are bad obviously, but there are enough bad apples and then the police protect their own that we need to be able to audit them.
They earned it, unfortunately.
