Believe what you want but when Petersen was at his peak and really wanted a kid he could close the parents better than any coach in the conference, and did with Herbert's. It's also how he got Molden and flipped BB.
He only lost badly on that front with the Stanford kids.
Huh? From my understanding the "narrative" is UW wanted Mariota and it came down to Oregon and Washington and he chose Oregon. UW recruited Herbert but like almost everyone else they never offered because of the injuries, but he would have seriously considered UW had they offered. Where is the BS?
That he wanted to go to UW but his parents made him honor his committment to Oregon. It's the opposite side of the same coin being pulled out of a doog's ass in this thread.
I don't think anyone has ever said this, especially considering was never offered. The narrative has always been resentment to Petersen and the staff for not offering/recruiting him.
Well, 'anyone has ever said this' is a pretty broad statement. And, on this board, it has been said.
The story, as I've heard it a million times, is that Oregon wasn't recruiting him and there was some family or family friend connection, or some other thing like that, at UW that somehow got Herbert in front of the staff and that led to a visit by Herbert and his parents. And it goes that once Oregon realized that Herbert was generating interest they started paying attention and eventually offered him. When he visited Washington he wasn't being recruited by Oregon … or anybody else in P5 as I recall. Could be wrong about that part, but I don't think so. So, yeah, I'm sure at some point they were high on Washington, especially since home town wasn't giving him the time of day.
“There’s no doubt,” Mark Herbert said, “that had they continued on the path, that we’d have welcomed that (scholarship offer) in a heartbeat. It was really heading in that direction. … They were the only ones, the only big school talking to us.”
For the record I was on Doogman I think at the time and confounded why they weren't recruiting Herbert more. No one decent was signing since Cobra Jack started as a true freshman in 2015 so why not take a guy with big time potential. Instead they took Bridge fucking Gadd. Just the worst QB name ever.

I can't believe you guys believe this shit.
Yes you're right

Fuck man, you're right. Believing Herbert may have signed with UW before even the Oregon offer in 2016 is a wild notion.
He sucks ass and has the best job in the world - backup QB.
"Oregon's most celebrated son abandons pride and joins Washington Natives"
It's the same BS narrative that was spun around Mariota.

I have no idea about Mariota's recruitment.
I could swear I’ve seen an interview with Herbert where he said he was ready to sign with UW until Oregon stepped in.
Herbert was made to be a duck

Could Justin Herbert have ended up a Husky?
