Here's a pretty big miss about Seinfeld overall: 'It's a show about nothing.'
Even if it maybe became that eventually, clearly they didn't set out with that intention.
Season 1 and the original show premise was 'Here's a young comedian and bachelor, trying to figure out which friends he's going to keep as well as his love life which is made complicated by one of his friends.'
It goes off for several episodes like that and he states in one of the standup segments late in the season that, despite their issues, "You can't just breakup with your friends." Which sets up the entire rest of the show. He also sees the aspects of dating that are a waste of his time compared to spending time with his friends, like when the chick from Michigan comes to stay with him and he finds out she's engaged.

I’m sure Derek watches this episode on a nightly basis
Need to work some angry at Koreans Frank Costanza into my repertoire.
I watched the pilot and first couple episodes recently and your description is spot on.
