Just some thoughts on Kikaha at Buck. There has been a lot of chatter about our lack of pass rush was due to him being in coverage too much.
Here is a breakdown:
6 tackles (4 s & 2 a) 1 sack 1 TFL 1 pass breakup on Baker =D>
72 snaps
56 rushing the QB or run
14 out in zone coverage
2 lined up against slot WR/TE but played run support
He actually rushed a lot in the first half from the edge and was getting owned by Rodgers. Any time he got his hand on Hau'oli it was over. On the first big TD they actually rolled right at him and Rodgers had him tied up with some support from the RB.
In the 2nd half they started lining him up inside and mixed up some stunts which seemed to be pretty effective. He had two sacks nullified by offsides (one by him and the other from Feeney). Unfortunately his only true sack came on a missed pickup by their RB.
I have no problem with the amount of times they used him in zone coverage. Actually it was somewhat effective they rarely completed anything to his side. The main problem I have is they never disguised it. If we was off the line next to the slot, the QB had to know it was zone coverage. When he was in more of a traditional DE position, you knew he was rushing the QB. I think he could be very effective in that spot if they just tried to mix it up a bit and not play their hand before the snap. -

Isn't Sark the same guy who couldn't punch it in against Notre Dame with 8 fucking chances?

While the last two games sucked, I was really happy about how Petersen won those games. At HI, he knew we had an advantage in the running game. At the end of the game, he did nothing stupid. He pounded it and milked the clock. Done. Against EWU, he took advantage of our size and pounded the ball. He stayed committed to the run never getting flustered. Done. Nothing stupid.
The D remains a work in process as noted everywhere. But, the work is really in the back end. We need a corner to step up against IL to start opposite Peters against Stanford. Hopefully, Dixon brings. I only say Dixon because he's more physically mature vs Kelly, Jones, et. al. -
Some random thoughts I didn't get to or forgot about on the podcast:
Petersen makes me confident the defensive issues will get better. He's picking up sunflower seeds and obsessing over every detail of the program. I bet he was involved more heavily than normal this week. He's not Sark who only cared about the QB and play calling. He cares about every single aspect and won't stand for those kind of performances. I remember watching an Urban Meyer interview after Ohio State beat Indiana 52-49 in Meyer's first year at Ohio State. When asked about it, Meyer said he was going to become a lot more involved on that side of the ball. I see Petersen doing the same. That's my hope at least.
This team should still win 10 games. Maybe it will be 9-4 with a bowl win, but 10+ should still be the goal. Sark was an average coach and could have won 9 games in both 2011 and 2012. In 2011, a good coach beats Oregon State and Baylor. In 2012, WSU and Boise State. This team isn't any worse than those two. Despite the bumpy road, we will be 4-0 going into conference play. Other than Oregon, no team looks unbeatable. Petersen should be able to win at least 5 conference games. -
