Can you give me general examples of the pandering you're talking about? I don't see much pandering going on, except maybe in the Tug Tavern a little.Canadawg said:I get why there are vote buttons for posts but I would hazard a guess that if they were taken away there would be more comments in general and less pandering posts and comments

This bored is the perfect blend of malarkey and football talk. If we have a good team, the balance will shift a little to more football related with the same underlying tomfoolery we are accustomed to. -
Hard to come up with examples but I meant jokes people know will get chins and likes. It's a quick high but doesn't add substance to the site and clogs up discussion. 81st time type jokes, pea patch complaints and nonsense puppy stories have a place I'm sure but would be nice to talk football sometimes. Maybe a "Serious Football Thread" of some type would be worth trying?DerekJohnson said:

I post football stories every day and the thing is the excitement level for this team on a scale of 1-10 is about -4. The boards will reflect the level of interest and excitement in the team.Canadawg said:

Think about how dead this bored would be after the Jimmy Lake firing if there was no malarky. It is not a mutually exclusive thing.Canadawg said:

Stalin is at his wit's end because he is trying to revive it. Posting football articles daily and podding regularly. But those who can provide interesting discussion are as burned out on bad Husky football as the rest of us.
DeBoner needs to have some early success and fan enthusiasm will follow. But right now, the only thing that will save this bored is time and winning. (I am kind of hoping that an actual football game will start things rolling. .. but it may take several. ) -
Yeah I definitely recognize the malarkey keeps the machine running I just mean there could be an emphasis on not squashing legitimate discussion when it does come up and possibly give it a more established platform somehow. I guarantee there are people who have popped in here over the years looking for husky football talk get turned off by the ratio of nonsense.
For me it was noticeable a few years ago when some posters left for their own site because alot of them were bringing interesting football discussions and recruiting. Obviously their formula (and website itself) was a train wreck but now there's a discord channel funneling in people desperate for a cohesive husky football outlet and I just find it a shame that this site isn't where people are landing. -
UW just needs to win.
I stay interested even when they suck because I don't have a life. I focus on individual players that interest me. The board as a whole, though, needs some motivation in the form of winning before Xs and Os and individual players (aside from shitty ones) get much notice. The post quality goes up quickly then. -
Are you saying the discord channel is growing and flourishing? I haven't been over there since late last year. Either way, good luck to them.Canadawg said:Yeah I definitely recognize the malarkey keeps the machine running I just mean there could be an emphasis on not squashing legitimate discussion when it does come up and possibly give it a more established platform somehow. Your words are very similar to what Chest was telling me back in 2014-15. He said if I didn't cut out the swearing and malarkey then the site would collapse. But at our peak, which was following the 2019 Rose Bowl, we were at 2 million page views a month. So our formula does work.
Compared to August of 2021, our traffic right now is down about 45%, but donations are down 15%. So that came as a pleasant surprise.
Anyway, thank you for your feedback. -
There seems to be quite the contingent on the discord but it's a terrible platform imo.DerekJohnson said:

Please to be providing examples of actual cause and effect. I've had something typed into this box since the day you asked the question, but I hesitate to post it because it's beating a dead horse from me, it's an unpopular view, and I recognize that I may be wrong. Since this has semi-swerved back toward legitimate feedback, though, what the hell:
My problem has always been Vanilla. I've never had a "social media" account because I much prefer forums for online interaction. Sure, half my posts here are met with a "tl;dr" or "fuck off, Tequilla," but only half the time... Point is, forums are my jam, and I post on a lot of them. This one has to be my least favorite from a software experience standpoint. Every time Vanilla touches the code (and why, exactly, are they even doing that in the first place?), they seem to break something or add a "feature" that sucks. It's been at least a year now that clicking on a link brings you do a goddamned splash page telling you, "Hey, guess what links do: They take you to a different page! Good luck, and rep the north!" As of about two weeks ago, I'm going to post this, and it'll take me back to the parent page, where I'll see that there's a new post in this thread: the one I just posted. "Chins are not working, and Vanilla's been notified. We'll get them back next month."
All of this in the most expensive forum software that has ever existed, when there are alternatives that work and are literally free. It's such a weird value proposition to me, and I've said this before. The end result is that we have to raise nearly $10K to stay above water every year, which, divided by the number of people who see that kind of value in the place, puts the price pretty high. As high as a MotoGP streaming subscription, for instance, which is crazy when you consider what they are relatively.
We've been over this before, and I understand the counterarguments: People like Vanilla (familiarity?), Stalin wants to be jacking to Korean girls fishing on YouTube and not configuring and updating forum software all the time, etc. There's also a part of me that thinks maybe the high barrier of entry (without being a freeloader) is a good thing, as this place isn't for everyone.
It wouldn't be fair to point out what I don't like without pointing out the positive as well, so I'm going to somewhat counter @Canadawg's criticism: Although he's right that this isn't necessarily the place you want to go if you want to have a good ol' Huskie football circle jerk, it's pretty much the only place you can go where you can be honest about how badly the coaches suck or how much of a pussy Asa Turner is or how rad it is that Myles Gaskin fucked a girl so hard she shit herself. I don't come here for Husky football because I don't care that much anymore. I come here for the same reason people who quit smoking like hanging out in smokey bars: I've been to the Tug, so I want all of you to die painfully, but damn it if I don't appreciate you all for being willing to laugh at wheelchair jokes in a time where nothing's allowed to be funny anymore.
Anyway, that's all I got. -
Hey, look! A new post in this thread!

I just hope once the season starts it will be more about football than malarkey. Likely wont' be though. I think Canadawg has a point - even the jaded guys here (and especially them) have a lot of football knowledge that would be cool to read, see their analysis. I'm not that guy - but those that are could make this board better I think. Tell us why Asa sucks (yeah I see he misses tackles, isn't physical, etc.); but I bet he's also out of position, doesn't react properly, is some of that coaching, are all DBs underperforming. Make a case and show off your football insights. I wouldn't even know whether you're right, but its fun to read people who at least present themselves as knowing their stuff. And points for mock ups, step by step explanations of how a play broke down, etc. I know that stuff is time consuming, but can really add value.
-
Disagree. This place is at its best when the team is either 1. Close, but still maddeningly not there or 2. Terrible and a melting pot of @haie(t), shitty takes, and calls for vengeance/murdertheknowledge said:Man, if you could get the Husky’s to win at about a 80% clip over the next fifteen years and recruit at a top ten level that would be a great start. Oh and finally build that mythical fence around the state of Washington. This place would be a lot of fun after that.

If you start or are in a thread that stays alive without malarkey then you've really accomplished something. I'd hate to lose that standard of measure. It's a rare feat and high honor, and should stay that way.JoeEDangerously said:I vote yea on Proposition Malarkey

I'm drawing a blank.
Guessing you mean this one?
Just received this message from a guy (who shall remain anonymous) that I've interacted with over the years on DM and HH: "Idiocy is the norm on this board. People who disagree with the majority idiots would rather just not comment to remain in the "in-crowd" and avoid negative responses. The endless circle jerk and pandering continues just like on fucking Doogman. I don't give a fuck about attention or validation. If I did I would be one of the many circle jerkers pandering for chins. I speak my fucking mind. Anybody with a fucking brain knows a Jake Browning led UW team is getting butt fucked in the Playoffs. "Making the playoffs" is not a positive when you get butt fucked on national television you idiots. I expect UW to be on a similar level to teams like Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Playing any of those teams in the Rose Bowl is a good match up for UW because there won't be a massive talent gap like there would be versus Bama, Georgia, Clemson, or Ohio State. If UW makes the playoffs it won't mean that they're a better team compared to if they were selected for the Rose Bowl. It will simply mean other teams that are better than UW around the nation don't take care of business against better competition than the Pac-12 and UW benefits from that. In no way will UW deserve to go to the Playoffs again with Browning at QB and a bunch of JAGs at WR and no Hunter Bryant and fucking BBK as the starting MIKE backer. FUCK OFF!"
The guy that sent me this note is NO fan of kim or any of the other jerks over at DM.
Look, I'm not going to advocate for people to be censored (like the d-bags that ruined DM), nor am I going to lecture anybody. I will only say that this website has the opportunity to become a REAL and UNFILTERED alternative to DM. The problem is that a few folks on here insist on turning threads into name-calling and 8th-grade-level cursing contests, or just an opportunity to 'zing' other people.
I'll be the first to say that at times I've been guilty of that BS as well.
I guess my only suggestion is that some folks should decide if they want this to become the website that ALL OF US have described at one time or another - a place of INTELLIGENT analysis where INTENSE criticism and UNSCRIPTED opinion is welcome - or do we want HH to be just a place of one-liners, biting insults, and contests to tear down others. I realize that it's often both, but I tend to agree with this guy that it tilts a little too much toward the latter.
Just a thought. Peace. Now fire away.

Okay, a few comments. Ever since Vanilla got bought out by Higher Logic, I've noticed a few more problems than usual. Some of them you guys never see because they involve my admin dashboard. Generally speaking, I'm happy with Vanilla. Several years ago, one of our OGs talked me into leaving Vanilla and transferring to a much less expensive setup. It was a colossal disaster. It was frustrating for me, I didn't like how it looked or functioned, and I received a shitstorm of complaints. It was so bad that one or more posters thought I was pulling a prank on everyone. After one month I moved us back to Vanilla, and that OG rarely posts here anymore.1to392831weretaken said:I've had something typed into this box since the day you asked the question, but I hesitate to post it because it's beating a dead horse from me, it's an unpopular view, and I recognize that I may be wrong. Anyway, that's all I got.
You say that I prefer Korean fishing videos to configuring software. Well, beyond my dashboard, I am not a programmer. I have to rely on Vanilla IT guys or hire my own people to get things done.
It doesn't cost $10,000 to keep this place afloat. The cost can vary depending on how much outside help I have to hire during the year. But for this year I'm looking to keep it at a minimum, so the costs of running this including taxes to the IRS and buying and shipping SWAG will run about $4,300. So as it stands right now, I'll make about $3,900 profit for administering the site 90 minutes a day, 365 days a year. I remember @PHD_Dawg angrily insisting that I should be running this place like a soup kitchen/charity and making $0. But while I'm making a small profit it's not like I'm getting rich off it.
Yes, the notification thing from the past two weeks has been irritating. I will put in a work order right now. If you truly think I don't give a shit, you are mistaken.
Also, I am 100% positive that when there is something substantive to talk about in regards to football, you will see it happening here. The problem is that there's not much to discuss when it comes to Husky football. Hardcore Husky has always been about keeping it real and not making waves when no wind is blowing, so to speak.
Thank you for your feedback. -
Vanilla makes it easy for tards like me to post photos and other malarkey
And @PHD_Dawg is a known communist

We can't have a good offense our program is built on DEFENSE!!
