Or we could spend 80 billion so far on a train to nowhere

Sounds like transportation racism imoMikeDamone said:European rail travel is good. Probably the only thing these cucks do well.
Getting from Seattle to Spokane in 3 hours or less with multiple departure times. For $30. Also fast cheap trains to Leavenworth, Wenatchee, Yakima, ellensburg, etc. -
My reason for support is that not everyone likes to fly and if you took away the support for airlines from the feds they would fail too.SFGbob said:
Why? It's a fucking boondoggle that wouldn't survive without Federal subsidies. Train travel is slow and unreliable. If they market doesn't support it why should the government?Goduckies said:
I am a fan of expanding Amtrak, it can be done fairly cheaply compared to building HSR... but the California HSR is just stupidtrublue said:Expanding Amtrak is “Building Back Better” . . . “Biggest bang for the buck we can expend(?).”

Done it numerous times... been over the whole US on the train. In sleeper it isn't cheap, but there is some amazing scenery.trublue said:
Take a trip on Amtrak from Los Angeles to Portland (30 hours) and get back to me. Doesn’t matter whether it is coach or with a roomette.Goduckies said:

It can be expanded “fairly cheaply” . . . Surely you jest!!! -
They actually lose a ton on the NEC when you count maintenance. That's where 90% of the subsidy goes.SFGbob said:
If time is not an issue and you don't mind unscheduled stops and sitting on a train for 30 hours when a flight would take you 2 it's great. Oh yeah, the fact that Amtrak actually loses money on every rail line they operate outside of the DC to Boston, NYC, Philly corridor is another bonus.trublue said:

I stayed in a roomette (sofa that folds down into a bed). I pulled the window “shade” down after a couple of hours. No one was able to get it back up the rest of the trip.Goduckies said:

You’ve traveled around the country in Coach?
C’mon, man. Seriously? -
I enjoyed the 9-12 hour train ride from SB to Sac in my college days.
Take way too much Adderall and zone out the window while listening to Bon Iver. Once the surge hits, pull out the laptop and think about doing homework before deciding to write the intro to a new screenplay concept. Get stuck for several hours on how to format.
Feel weird, grab a beer and a microwaved cheeseburger from the snack station. Comeback, abandon screenplay, Shit post on hardcore Husky. -
Coach no sleeper yea

I used to love the NY to DC train. It is one area that kind of makes sense for rail. I am ;sure it is not making money, but to sit there, use their internet and get work done was nice.Goduckies said:

That northeast corridor is about the only place where a train makes sense.Bendintheriver said:
