Or we could spend 80 billion so far on a train to nowhere

Santa Rosa is the county seat of Sonoma County north of SF
19 bucks LA to Sonoma

Yup added Southwest to Eugene to... for free, yet spend billions on a train that nobody will take 3 times as long as a plane and triple the cost. Madness
-
Like food stamps and free daycare, trains to nowhere are "infrastructure" and therefore every real American needs to support it. Proper stewardship of our limited resources isn't a voting issue, but voting for a dementia patient who loves to waste money is a reflection of high character.RaceBannon said:

Expanding Amtrak is “Building Back Better” . . . “Biggest bang for the buck we can expend(?).”
OMG
Insanity prevails . . .

Embrace 1850’s technology for a brighter future

Hunter Biden, previous Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at Amtrak, for five years.

I am a fan of expanding Amtrak, it can be done fairly cheaply compared to building HSR... but the California HSR is just stupidtrublue said:Expanding Amtrak is “Building Back Better” . . . “Biggest bang for the buck we can expend(?).”

Don't forget highly competent. Trump was incompetent so you couldn't vote for him.WestlinnDuck said: -
Why? It's a fucking boondoggle that wouldn't survive without Federal subsidies. Train travel is slow and unreliable. If they market doesn't support it why should the government?Goduckies said: -
People here actually cited that in order to claim Hunter was a highly experience corporate lawyer in order to defend why he got the position on the BOD with the Ukrainian oil company.trublue said:Hunter Biden, previous Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at Amtrak, for five years.

Take a trip on Amtrak from Los Angeles to Portland (30 hours) and get back to me. Doesn’t matter whether it is coach or with a roomette.Goduckies said:

Not a fan. People don't want to travel on trains except in limited situations. I can drive to Seattle (most times in around 3 hours). When I get there I don't have to rent a car and drive to my appointment directly. 20 miles a gallon, 360 mile round trip and $3 a gallon gas = $54 bucks. If I took a co-worker, still $54. Train would be $72 round trip for a refundable ticket. As it is now, stated trip time is 3.5 hours. To take the train, 30 minute drive to Union station in Portland. Then at least $12 parking. Need to get there at least a half hour early or more. Then when I get to Seattle, I have to rent a car. Say a half hour and $40. Then I need to drive to me destination. Then I need to drop off the rental car. Another half hour. Then back to Portland and another half hour to get home. We could spend billions of dollars and cut the travel time down to 2 hours. Basically, went I went to the Seattle area for a meeting we drove about 75% of the time. Occasionally, when I was going by myself, then I'd fly. Time was about the same with the travel to and from the airport and waiting and security.Goduckies said:
If trains were more efficient than air or automobile, then we would have a lot of train travel. Let the market work. -
If time is not an issue and you don't mind unscheduled stops and sitting on a train for 30 hours when a flight would take you 2 it's great. Oh yeah, the fact that Amtrak actually loses money on every rail line they operate outside of the DC to Boston, NYC, Philly corridor is another bonus.trublue said:

Highly unionized employees . . . Had to bust up a poker game for a few minutes to have the Porter get sheets for my bed. He was irate cuz it was supposed to have been done by another employee in LA.
Simply, the trip through hell.
I can’t imagine taking coach for 30 hours.
Only a slight upgrade from Greyhound.

Try taking the train to Williston fucking North Dakota in January. That’s some special travel.
-
Trains work in Italy and Europe because those countries are small.

When I was 17 our high school Spanish club went to Mexico for a month at a Spanish school for US students. Took Greyhound to Mexico. What a cluster phuck. First night bunch of drunk guys in the back that got dropped off in the middle of nowhere at about 3 AM. Our high school teacher after a week down in Saltillo got threatened by his wife with divorce if he didn't come home. After consultation with the parents, they decided to leave me in charge of six other teenagers. So, I led our intrepid squad after the four weeks, back to Portland from Saltillo, Mexico via bus. You think that sh*t would happen today. I hate Greyhound.trublue said:Highly unionized employees . . . Had to bust up a poker game for a few minutes to have the Porter get sheets for my bed. That go from a dense city to another fairly close dense city -

European rail travel is good. Probably the only thing these cucks do well.
Getting from Seattle to Spokane in 3 hours or less with multiple departure times. For $30. Also fast cheap trains to Leavenworth, Wenatchee, Yakima, ellensburg, etc. -
Sounds like transportation racism imoMikeDamone said:European rail travel is good. Probably the only thing these cucks do well.

My reason for support is that not everyone likes to fly and if you took away the support for airlines from the feds they would fail too.SFGbob said: -
Done it numerous times... been over the whole US on the train. In sleeper it isn't cheap, but there is some amazing scenery.trublue said:

They actually lose a ton on the NEC when you count maintenance. That's where 90% of the subsidy goes.SFGbob said: -
I stayed in a roomette (sofa that folds down into a bed). I pulled the window “shade” down after a couple of hours. No one was able to get it back up the rest of the trip.Goduckies said:
You’ve traveled around the country in Coach?
C’mon, man. Seriously? -
I enjoyed the 9-12 hour train ride from SB to Sac in my college days.
Take way too much Adderall and zone out the window while listening to Bon Iver. Once the surge hits, pull out the laptop and think about doing homework before deciding to write the intro to a new screenplay concept. Get stuck for several hours on how to format.
Feel weird, grab a beer and a microwaved cheeseburger from the snack station. Comeback, abandon screenplay, Shit post on hardcore Husky. -
Coach no sleeper yea

I used to love the NY to DC train. It is one area that kind of makes sense for rail. I am ;sure it is not making money, but to sit there, use their internet and get work done was nice.Goduckies said: -
What support for the airlines - pre chicom crud?Goduckies said: -
That northeast corridor is about the only place where a train makes sense.Bendintheriver said:
