.330 without any power or speed isn't worth 24 million. Cano is a great player, but he needs to go on a run where he hits some HR's. .300-.320 with 15-20 HR's should be expected. He has time to get there though.

If he does what he's doing right now throughout the contract he'll be worth it. The problem is he's going to age and those last few years are going to be brutal, so they need him to provide significant surplus value now to offset how they'll be overpaying him at the end. Right now, that's not happening, but I imagine he'll go off at some point.

    That OBP is beautiful though.

Cano is having his worst offensive season since 2008 (using OPS). He had 40+ doubles from 2009-2013, and he is only on pace for 34. His numbers are down across the board other than batting average. His WAR and WAA are significantly down from his past 5 seasons. He's performing below his typical level. Check for yourself. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/canoro01.shtml

Some of it is to be expected because of ball park adjustment, but saying he's been lights out or incredible is false. He's a hell of a player and you can't get upset at a guy for hitting .330 with a .387 OBP. Those are great, but the Mariners need power. DHDawg, you said .330 hitters are rare nowadays, but 30+ HR guys are even rarer. 36 HR's led the NL last year. I know Cano has never been a true masher, but they aren't paying him 24 million to hit singles. Expecting 15-20 HR's for a guy who has hit between 25-33 HR's the past 5 years isn't crazy.

M's have lost 4 in a row now but Jesus Montero is going to save us by now protecting Cano in the line-up.

when did I ever say he's been incredible? If I were to grade him for this season he would get probably a B. I just don't think it's worth wringing our hands over his performance when there's so many other problems on this roster. Like the fact they don't have a fucking DH.
I don't think 15-20 homers is too much to ask at all, but he has time to get there

also sabr lovers often dismiss lineup protection.

but cano has had most of his batted balls and hits go towards left and center field, which shows they are pitching him away
