You can call him a beta all you want but he’s arguably the best defensive mind in CFB along with Venables.DoogWhisperer said:

I don't disagree that he's a great defensive mind but that isn't going to save our program if Jimmy doesn't know what the fuck he's doing (which seems more and more likely).backthepack said:

I've been dreading the inevitable since last month when I read an article in the Athletic in which they interviewed 3 power5 recruiting coordinators anonymously and picked their brains about how Corona has changed their approach and what concerns them about the whole situation re: recruiting.FireCohen said:

While virtual tours make an impact, it won't be nearly the same impact as a physical visit. The coaching staff screwed the pooch on this one. Virtual tours from the beginning would have put UW even, if not slightly ahead of a lot of these recruits that went elsewhere. While an official visit might bring some of the non-committed and even committed players back in the fold, I find it difficult for a virtual visit to make up much ground if any. If these coaches are behind the times with their social media and distant contacting, I can't imagine them having the ability to differentiate themselves with virtual tours.bananasnblondes said:Have to wonder if the fact that Jimmy now seems to be taking the "virtual visit" thing seriously (about 3 months too late), we might see a few kids come back around to UW.
One coach's answers in particular (it obviously wasn't a UW guy) really hit me like a punch in the gut. This dude was extremely bullish on the idea that on campus visits would not resume at all this recruiting cycle. And he didn't just state it as opinion. He broke down the feasibility of it... flying families from across the country who've just been hanging out at airports and likely visited other schools, closely intermingling with 100s of not 1000s of people, having to test everyone before they're hanging out with staff/players, etc. Then even if they test negative, how do you monitor every single person's activity or even know what they're doing at night that might not be the wisest of choices.
It's hard enough trying to control 150 or so players and support staff to make sure they're making good choices and staying on top of a very fluid situation. Add 10, 20, 30 some recruits/families into that equation and this dude saw no feasible scenario in which this could be permitted at all this year. And at this point, the TBS dead period was only through June and the only question being raised was what month will visits start resuming.
When I read that piece, it occurred to me that Jimmy had no contingency plans and was taking a humongous gamble. One that even if he is on the winning side of, shows incredible shortsidedness. It was at this moment, a sense of pure dread came over me as the gravity of the future implications began to sink in. It's one thing to make a stupid rookie mistake and learn from it. Fine.
What I couldn't shake was the question that if Jimmy could be THIS fucking tone deaf / cavalier regarding a single issue like this, what other important decisions has he made or will make without having worked through every possible scenario first? And right then is when I realized it: we're fucked.
Good coaches, let alone great coaches do not leave a single stone unturned. They're obsessive about every piece of minutae to an almost unhealthy degree. They manage their programs so obsessively so that they're never caught off guard by literally anything. Petersen was as good as anyone in the country in this regard. And unfortunately this is not a trait you just turn off and on when the job requires it. It's not a learned trait. You either have it or you don't. All the good ones do.
Unfortunately, I'm fairly confident at this point that Jimmy does not. And that scares the shit out of me. -
One of my fav “insider” stories was the one about how sark was so confident we were landing a player (I don’t even remember who it was, I think he went to UCLA) they had his page in the signing day press booklet. Then they had to go through and rip his page out when they didn’t get the NLI.chuck said:
Jesus christ. Sark's recruiting was a fucking joke, as Petersen demonstrated in his first two classes. Each class had a couple of good players surrounded by filler and high Hope's dashed by non qualifiers. He also continually (even after he was gone) received doog credit for being "in on" elite guys that were obviously only listing UW among their favorites because UW begged them to.DoogWhisperer said:

That's what I've been worried about. From the very first press conference where he awkwardly talked about his love of X's and O's and every ensuing interview since where he's described his offense as "attacking" and "aggressive", he doesn't inspire much confidence for his vision for the program At this point he's basically the defensive version of Sark.guntlove said:Every single thing Jimmy has done as HC has been fucking terrible. His staff hires were an absolute flaming shit-wreck.
His complete mismanagement and chincompetence in recruiting has been stunning. The total inability to read the situation and adjust on the fly is a massive read flag. As was his inability to put aside his loyalty to shitty coaches like Bob and Bonerpop and do what’s best for the program.
He seems to have some toxic mix of arrogance and incompetence, and sounds like a fucking used car salesman when he tries to sell the program.
Jimmy’s in way over his head. He is going to be Gilbertson Willingham kind of bad. Take yer screenshots.
Lake could continue down the pathe he's on right now and still easily pull in better classes than Sark did.
It was so obviously a bullshit story sark and his boys put out to beat their chests and pretend they were in on an elite dude. But they also knew 100% Kim would gobble it up and push it out to the doogs who crave anything that confirms their belief that coaches are actually better than their record. -

I’m waiting on Jimmy to coach a couple games first. This is still sizzle. I’m starting to expect the worst, but everything gets fixed by winning.

The problem is that there is so much talent on this team that this team could be very good if there is a season. We know for the most part that the coaches can coach (by and large).RoadDawg55 said:I’m waiting on Jimmy to coach a couple games first. This is still sizzle. Problem is coach is just part of the job. The lack of recruiting is going to torpedo the program down the road ... that’s the major risk.
Jimmy going 10-2 or 11-1 this year not only results on Jimmy doubling down on what he’s doing being the right approach but almost assuredly results in Jen extending the contract.
Anything Jimmy does in 2020/2021 is riding the bow wave ... we don’t learn about Jimmy until 2022 at the earliest -

Yeah, if we go 10-2 or 11-1, I'm pretty sure we will see recruiting skyrocket. Winning can cure the recruiting issues. The problem is if we have a mediocre season, you arent building for the future. You're just perpetuating the downward trajectory.RoadDawg55 said:

Sling Blade had DeForest Buckner and Arik Armstead on DL.
De'Anthony Thomas, Thomas Tyner, and Byron Marshall at RB.
Devon Carrington, Devon Allen, Bralon Addison, Josh Huff, and Pharaoh Brown at WR/TE.
Overall 2020 Washington should have more blue chips, but Helf was handed more proven top-end talent. It only took two classes ranked around 20th with too many JAGs to tank the program. Combined with Helf's lack of aggressiveness and losing the locker room. I doubt Jimmy loses the locker room like that, but I didn't think Helf would either when all the position coaches were proven veterans.

2018/2019 classes can 1000% win the Pac-12 and stay on the field with anyone in the Rose Bowl (including Ohio State)
2020 class. 100% win the Pac-12, don't have same optimism about Rose Bowl if it's the Buckeyes or even Penn State.
This class at 50% of the way done so far. Can win the Pac-12 if Absolutely Everything (injuries, schedule, bounce of the ball, etc) breaks their way. Even if he can get the four horseman (JTT, EE, Prentice and flip Franklin back) it will be top heavy with limited depth.
Our last 5 commits have been a H/fullback, 5'9 slot corner (who I like), a project who's played one year of fb from Germany, Latu, who we had to circle back on since we lost out on our higher rated guys coupled with his other schools apparently cooling on him and with questions on where his head has been at, and a DL from Renton who no one had ever seen/heard of.
IMO that's 3 guys who are reaches at best, and worse case smell of desperation.
