Pistol Pete and the Trojans

Now is a good chance to catch up on your history. SEC Storied has a good Pistol doc. Guy was unreal and ahead of his time. When someone wants you to suck Steph Curry's dick tell them you belong to Pete
Also noted in the article is the 24-2 USC team that lost to UCLA twice and won the CCA tournament because only the champ went to the Big Dance which was small. Paul Westphal was on the team

He's still the leader collegiate scorer with no 3 point shot. Dude AVERAGED 44.2 ppg on twos. That's unreal. You can't tell me he didn't knock down 3 or 4 current trey length shots per game if that had been in effect. Probably more like 5 or 6.
By the time he got to the Celtics and a winning team, his knees were shot. But back in the day, if you could somehow catch a Hawks game (rarely), he was the shit.
Yeah - fuck Steph Curry. Pete was dropping 45 while getting mugged by defenders.

Pete played for some terrible teams. I’m looking at his teams now. I think he had an appealing style at the time, but I question whether the results match the hype.

That's not hype. That's fact.

I’m talking NBA. I obviously wasn’t there so it’s hard to comment. Hard for him to glamorize a guy that never won anything. Curry is incredibly efficient and won. Pistol Pete seems more like Iverson and had an aesthetically pleasing game that didn’t necessarily lead to winning basketball.PurpleThrobber said:

In the article Race posted, he went 18-43 and scored 50. The LSU teams weren’t very good either and played all white guys. -
The LSU teams were all white and when Pete did get to the NBA the Black players froze him out in Atlanta
If you get the SEC Network its on around 2AM tomorrow morning. Record it
Maravich was a unique player.
The following season (1976–77) was his most productive in the NBA. He led the league in scoring with an average of 31.1 points per game. He scored 40 points or more in 13 games,[22] and 50 or more in 4 games.[23] His 68-point masterpiece against the Knicks[24][25] was at the time the most points ever scored by a guard in a single game, and only two players at any position had ever scored more: Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor.[26] Baylor was head coach of the Jazz at that time.
Maravich earned his third all-star game appearance and was honored as All-NBA First Team for the second consecutive season.
You aren't one of the top 5 twice if you can't play -
Nothing cracks me up more than the “random old player would DOMINATE in today’s game” argument.

I can tell

Because Pistol Pete of 2020 would never have lifted weights or had nutrition coaches or played on elite AAU travel teams, right?ThomasFremont said:Pistol Pete is a bitch. He’d get dog walked in todays NBA.

Pistol Pete would probably be good. Skill is skill. If you had a high skill level back then, you would now. That said, I can also see how Pete would get eaten up in today’s game.
-
He’d be a spot up shooter. That’s it. His play making skills wouldn’t cut it, and his defensive game consisted of cherry picking slow fucks from the 60s that dribble like 2nd graders. He’d be a liability defending today’s guards and wings.RoadDawg55 said:Pistol Pete would probably be good. Skill is skill. If you had a high skill level back then, you would now. But hey, he will always have that one time he dribbled behind his back and threw a no look pass. -
Wooden called him the best ball handler of all time. He could dribble up and down the basement steps in his childhood home at full speed with two balls while blindfolded. He was taught to dribble out the back door of a car while his two dads drove around town intentionally driving at different speeds. He liked to ride a bike and dribble a basketball at the same time while biking into town two miles away. Just watch the youtube videos - nobody could handle a basketball like him. Respekt
For all the scoring, he never won a championship at any level. In 68 he led the NCAA in scoring as a Soph. tried out for the olympic team and was cut. He also played in the segregated SEC and when he played really good teams like UCLA, his teams lost.
He would have made it in the modern NBA as a point guard/three point specialist. His game translated nicely to the modern NBA. You wouldn't have wanted your daughter to date him unless she liked UFO's, infidelity, cocaine and drinking.
The dude was born without a left coronary artery. The entire blood supply to his heart was supplied by a small vessel that ran in a circle across his heart from the right to left side. The fact he was able to play basketball, let alone star in the NBA for ten plus years....most people with his rare condition lived into their teens. If it was today he would've had heart surgery at an early age and basketball would've been avoided in favor of video games and instagram.

So, he sucks. Got it.

I think the consensus is that he’s a white guy legend. Good player, but really, a black player that did what he did in the NBA would be labeled a disappointment or nobody would even care because there would be no legend to begin with.
-
It's ok - white guys can ball too.
Or is your guys' contention players like Connie Hawkins or Elgin Baylor or Oscar Robertson wouldn't translate to the current game either?
Because that's complete and utter bullshit.
-
Once in a while a thread begs for a @puppylove_sugarsteel return. This one is long for one of his Tommy rants.
-
Obviously white guys can ball. But I’m in agreement with Roadie that the only reason y’all give a shit about Pistol is because he’s white. He’s a poor man’s Brent Barry.PurpleThrobber said:It's ok - white guys can ball too.
