I could not agree more. A certain amount of the welfare state is absolutely necessary to have a functioning capitalist democracy. Only classical liberal, nut jerbs like @MikeDamone think otherwise. Churchill's People's Budget helped ward off the Red menace in the UK, much like the New Deal did in the country. The problem we have now is that too many Americans expect government to meet their every need, rather than help lessen the occasional pain inflicted by capitalism.RaceBannon said:

I guess growing up ducking and covering had its benefits. As much as I was pissed off at America for the racism and Vietnam and all the rest I NEVER saw the Soviets as an alternative. Lot of leftists did and still do
BRUCE COLE: There was a study done not too long ago that surveyed fifty of the elite colleges and universities. The students were asked questions taken from a high school curriculum, and the lack of historical knowledge was really appalling.
Olympia High in the early 70's was an Ivy League education I guess -

A safety net for the very few people who need it from time to time is good and is the right thing to do in the richest country in the history of life, but as all things with government, unintended consequences have fucked it up and has absolutely crushed whole segments of our society. I thinks it’s actually worse than people expecting the government to meet their needs. They couldn’t meet their needs of they had to. They have been rendered completely incapable of taking care of themselves. And it’s not just a small number. -
