"But the key variable does not appear to be religion itself"

I didn't read the article but my guess would be the key variable is the positive outlook or thinking of the subject. And of course that is not restricted to religious belief.

Most people would probably find they'd be happier if they believed in the possibility that they were going somewhere interesting after they die rather than just into the ground to be pooped on by deer and dogs and eventually become fertilizer for future trees.

Some of you in here aren't happy. I went to Mass at 5:00 today so football wouldn't interfere. I like going to Mass. That's what I like to do.

You make some good points and are sometimes funny, but your poasts are about as cheery as walking into a 10 x 10 foot, unheated Orthodox Church in Smolensk in winter, with 3 candles burning inside and a 90 year old monk sitting so silently in the corner you can't tell if he's dead or alive.

I'll pray for you. That will make me happy. That's what I like to do.

    I have a question ....

How come God stopped doing 'miracles' ...? I mean if he did them in 'Biblical' tones couldnthe do them now? Cause I'd like to see a miracle before I start giving my money to an organization that boogers kids ....

Also I find it interesting that there is one true and correct religion ... How can one unverified story be better and more true or real than another unverified story?

... Is it a possibility that someone more clever than others made all this shit for financial benefit and power...?

I am very reluctantly join any group, including a particular church. Within the Catholic Church, there are many sects. I joined a Parrish run by Dominicans which is very non-political. Yes, some of my money goes up through the upper levels of the Church, but the vast majority stays within the Parrish and does some excellent work with the homeless, which is very important to me. I agree, there's good and bad. It took me a long time to associate with a Parrish that I was convinced was more good than bad. I like Franciscans, Dominicans, and Jesuits. Those three have been out of favor with Rome for centuries, until very recently.

    That makes me happy.

D2D .... It is good to help others ... I like that .. But you skipped over the basic question.

In reality I don't really care and I am happy for whatever makes you happy ... But it doesn't make someone necessarily any happier to have a healthy skepticism about religion - agnosticism - or even find the whole thing absurd and not believe any of it - Atheism - and be OK with it and their place in the Universe than proclaim to be righteous and that you have a ticket to heaven. Because even you, when you sit in a quiet moment by yourself, know that the likelihood that this is real is incredibly, ridiculously slim to none.

I wish I was naive enough to buy into it... But that day passed long ago...

    All the best.

We wasted the rest of the pixie dust on my fucking resurrection

There were many self-proclaimed Messiahs that have appeared through history. Interesting that almost all were killed. But Jesus was resurrected. If you believe that, then you're a Christian. If you don't, you're entitled to your opinion, which I will protect that right with my life, and I have.

    End of discussion.

Do you think that Mormons are Christians?

Mormons believe in the Bible and the book of Mormon, which I've read. BTW, Orthodox Churches do not all read the same bible as Catholics and Protestants, (some dispute of Revelation, which I'm also not a fan of). They all might not agree on everything, obviously, but they're all Christians.

Sorry bud. You are alone in the universe. It is meaningless and random. Math won't even be there for your salvation. There is no salvation. You are ugly, stupid and dumpy because the ugly, stupid and dumpy whore you call momma bent over some years ago for the equally ugly, stupid and dumpy homeless guy, and the spooge that became you was doomed from thereon. The only thing about that tragic fuck fest that was not random were the two participants: ugly, stupid and dumpy tends to have to settle for ugly, stupid and dumpy.

This is why your daughter won't amount to anything, and your son needed to play football in the middle of nowhere in Montana to have even a small chance at any playing time.

"Bad" shit happens just because it does. There is no reckoning. Your ugly, stupid and dumpy kids won't be attractive, smart and athletic in the next world, because there is no next world.

You will fertilize the soil someday, and your contributions will get you to the same place that Jeffrey Dahmer occupies right now.

That's just the way it is. Find an existentialist and make friends with him. He's as close to reality as you'll ever get.

Or, keep reading fantasy novels. Your pick.
