Deserves own thread: UW Recruiting Banquet

I attended the recruiting banquet tonight. Fun to geek out a little.
Anyway, Malloe was the funniest coach on stage (Adams is a dud). He told some humorous stories and his comments about the interior DL caused laughs. Definitely can see why he is a good recruiter.
However, his pitch is completely tailored for island kids. He basically said his entire reason for being at Washington is because he sees so many similarities between Polynesian culture and the culture established by Pete. It was heartfelt, but made me wonder what kids from other backgrounds would think.

- Coaches mingled around with guests before the program began, which was cool. Surely they all had better things to do than hang with 300 arm chair experts.
- My two fiends and I had a good chat with Millie. Very personable and very stoked about this class, I asked if any of the new guys would play next year or if Levi, Tuli, Tamani and other older guys would shoulder the load. He smiled and said, “ Oh yeah, they’ll play.”
- Coach Pete didn’t talk about individual guys, but rather talked about this class in general and fielded questions.
- Damon Huard MC’d. Enthusiastic, and a little dorky.
- dumbest question of the night from the audience: “what about Puca Nacua?” Pete just turned the other way and said, “I don’t know him.“
- Best question of the night: somebody asked about tight ends. Pete just said it’s hard to find a tight end that can do all of the things they ask them to do. So, some years they may pass on people rather than just settle.
- When asked about defensive guys that are ready to make their mark, Jimmy Lake mentioned MJ Tafisi and a walk on named Edefuon Ulofoshio.
- Lake also said he thought McDuffie was the best CB in the he west.
- Cameron Williams is a violent player, ala JoJo McCintosh.
- Gregory is fired up about the LBs. very matter of fact coach-like speaking style. Said Tuputola may be the sleeper of the class. Kid is 248 pounds! Over 30 pounds heavier than Heimuli!
- Huff said it was the biggest OL class he’s ever had
- Bhonapha is funny but I dont sense a great deal of energy

Thanks Big Man. Here are my next morning nuggets: Was tired when I wrote the above last night and had too many beers.
- Petersen was asked if he is afraid of schools from other conferences taking away west coast talent. He smiled, rubbed his forehead and took a while to answer. Finally he said, "if I could share some stories, I would." You could tell that if had just one or two shots of whiskey he would've unleashed some shit about what happened on the recruiting trail. This clearly tells me that schools from other conferences (eh hem...sec...eh hem) were flashing a lot of money. I can't imagine that Pete and other coaches around the conference will tolerate this kind of thing for long. Hey Emmert, do your fucking job.
- Petersen also admitted that UW has played in 3 straight post-New Years bowl games...BUT LOST ALL THREE. "So we're clearly not there yet," he admitted.
- Everyone applauded Kalepo and one guy in front of me said, "great recruiter." But interpreting Huff's comments, Kalepo will be a project. Buelow, Luciano and Fautanu are all more more ready to play. Fautanu is a pretty violent player. Seems to love demoralizing people.
- Latu is an incredible specimen. Kwiatkowski said that despite weighing 270 pounds, Latu played plenty of inside LB and played on the edge with his hand up. Moves incredibly well for a guy that big.
- Both Latu and Trice looked like they will be good at holding the edge and collapsing the pocket. HOWEVER, my friends and I did not see lightning quickness off the edge. Joe Tryon looks like a quicker edge player than either of them. Still waiting for the stand up Haouli Kikaha-type of fast-twitch edge guy. Still waiting for replacements for Littleton and Feeney.
- Lots of laughs when Ngalu was playing RB and really terrorizing high schoolers trying to tackle him.
- Harris (DB Coach) showed a clip of McDuffie returning a punt. The kid is a 10.6 100 meter runner and simply has another gear. If he has half of Pettis' sense of space, cutting ability and how to read opponents' body positioning, he will be a great punt returner.
- Cam Davis has potential to be the big RB we have missed since Lavon Coleman left. Quick cutting ability. Good vision. Plus he is fast as shit. If he gets into the open field, not a lot of guys will catch him.
- Bob Gregory said that when Tim Horn (Kicker) showed up for the Polynesian Bowl, the other kids thought he was a LB. He is stoked about Horn, but Gregory better get his shit together when it comes to field goal kicking and the special teams (just my opinion).
- Pa'ama probably got the biggest "oohs and ahhs," simply because he is a freak of nature. If he wants to go past you, he is going to go past you. People laughed when Malloe said that he also punted.
- Gregory really stressed how Heimuli can cover a lot of ground quickly, and is a violent hitter. They joked that a few of our players (including Cam Williams) need to learn "the strike zone" when hitting a ball carrier.
- Fabiculanan can play both safety and CB.
- Harris said Asa Turner "has a body like Kam Chancellor." That tells me that they really view him as a safety...at least for now.
- Just want to stress again how well Tuputala moves for a guy listed at 249 pounds.
- Miki Ah You didn't play much his senior year because of injury (as we all know). But Gregory kept stressing how well he moves for a LB. They showed a clip of him taking a punt return to the house. Speaking of all the LBs (Heimuli, Ah You, Tuputala, Calvert), you can understand why somebody like Drew Fowler did not get an offer. My guess is that he simply cannot run like the other LBs.
- Calvert seems to get less attention than the other LB recruits, but Gregory really stressed how much they like him. Specifically mentioned his athleticism and intelligence having played QB.

Fowler runs like a motherfucker. Just had a smaller frame and doesn’t blow people up in the same way that Ah You does.
Ah You has a bigger frame, more short space quickness and closes keeping more power in his body to blast people than Drew.
That said, even though MAY is the higher probability prospect, I would not be shocked if Fowler ended up being just as good. -
- Not a lot of talk about Dylan Morris. He looks good enough (quick release, accuracy, etc.). When it came to QB chatter, most of the fans we ran into were commenting on Jacob Eason and Haener. The only comments about Morris were that, "he better turn out to be a better QB than millen's kid." To many people remember when oregon got jonathan stewart and UW got jr hasty.

We can agree to disagree. I see a standout DE that will get pressure, but not like a Don Jones or Andy Mason-type. Remember that Latu is 270 pounds.
I hope you're right. No question he will "out-quick" most opposing OTs and get around them. But I think Latu's strength will be collapsing the pocket, holding the edge and stringing out plays to the sideline. -

I love McDuffie. His DB highlights are incredible, but it's what he does with the all in his hands that really gets me worked up. John Roas 2.0.2. Yes, I'm doing on him and think he's that explosive. He's going to take some kicks and turnovers to the house.
It's kinda too bad Calvert doesn't generate much excitement. Other than Kaho last year, I don't recall any incoming LB prospects looking more complete and ready. He's equal to Heimuli in my book. Not as violent but just as good and bigger. -

Sure, but there's no doubt that a 270 pound high schooler has a lot of work to do if he's going to become a truly elite edge rusher instead of the 5T kind of player that his body type seems more suited for at the moment.
