This has been brought up in my podcast, The Doog Cast. The idea that the 'Western Powers' are in different conferences does lead to more interesting non conference games out west. That is SC or UCLA are now an interesting non conference game. Same could be said if WSU ends up in a different conference, which may actually add pressure to UW to to perform (which based on the record hasn't been a problem). But it does open up filling those non conference games with better competition. That being said, the other conferences still feast on sisters of the poor as well, and ultimately teams will want a 'gimme' game on the schedule regardless.
There isn't any difference between a top FCS team and a lower or mid-tier FBS team. The problem is scheduling shitty FCS teams. The Montanas and Easterns of FCS will put up as much of a fight as a team like Kent State. Anyway, the problem is scheduling cupcake teams at all. I can see the first game, but not more than one cupcake. It used to be that is all you could do, back in the days when all you had was the USS Enterprise in town.

Power 5 teams should not be allowed to play FCS or lesser FBS. If you don't want to give your fans an entertaining product then you need to just practice for 3 more weeks.

The fact is that in college football cross division games are common and the contender FCS teams are an entertaining product.
I keep hammering that college football going back to the old days of teams playing 2-3 good non-conference games would help the sport. No one will do it though because it's now all about trying to limit the amount of games you might lose. Another way the move to the BCS/Playoff has quietly downgraded the sport.

I’ve said the same thing. Either one cupcake vs a non P5 team or none at all. 3-4 like some schools do is fucking ridiculous and has really hurt the sport.
